DEHRADUN: The death toll in last month's massive landslides in Uttarakhand, triggered by heavy rain, is likely to go up after the state government put the figures of those missing at 5748 with chief minister Vijay Bahuguna saying that the government would declare them dead after July 15, a month after the tragedy.
Bahuguna said the state government would start disbursing the compensation amount of Rs 5 lakh for each victim after July 15. Of the missing, the maximum number is from Uttar Pradesh (2098), followed by Uttarakhand (924), Rajasthan (820), MP (811), Maharashtra (283), Delhi (213), Gujarat (126), Haryana (113), Andhra Pradesh (81), West Bengal (77), Bihar (63), Odisha (31), Chhattisgarh (27), Punjab (26), Jharkhand (23), Tamil Nadu (14), Jammu and Kashmir (3) and Pondicherry (1).
The Union ministry of rural development has granted a special package for Rs 500 crore under MGNREGA to the state government for rehabilitation and reconstruction work in floods-ravaged districts of Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts.
It is aimed at facilitating construction of semi-permanent and permanent structures and removal of debris from the affected areas. Under the package, the man-days may be increased to 150 days for 2013-14.
