Controversy over Gurung’s statement urging students to get leave classrooms for the streets-
DARJEELING, AUGUST 26, 2013:Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) President Bimal Gurung’s call to the students in the hills to come out to the streets and raise the demand for the formation of the separate state of Gorkhaland has led to controversy as constituent members of the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee (GJAC) have spoken out against it. One of the leaders of a prominent party and a member of the GJAC said that the GJAC had in principle agreed not to involve students and children in the movement. But with the GJM President urging the children specially between the ages of 12 to 18 years to be active in the movement has led to the question as to what will happen to the future of these children if they are not allowed to attend their classes. The schools in the hills have been shut down since 29th of July.
Gurung’s in a speech addressed to children yesterday had said, “Since you are all in schools, you can devote yourself to the movement. After you join college, you can then devote yourself to your career.”
A prominent educationist based in Darjeeling said, “It is really very unfortunate that the leaders are forcing the students at such tender age to get involved in the movement, when they should be in Schools studying. The schools and colleges have been closed in the hills for almost a month now and no one seems to be bothered about it. I think we will have to really think about where the future of our children lies – in schools or in the streets?”
