Kolkata - Majdoor Kranti Parishad supports Gorkhaland

Kolkata-based political organisation Majdoor Kranti Parishad has come up with a statement supporting a state of Gorkhaland. MKP central committee general secretary Amitava Bhattacharya, in a press statement, has appealed to the state and central governments to recognise the right to self-determination of oppressed nationalities as also to address the nagging problem of under development.

He said, “Being a political organisation of the toiling people, the party supports the Gorkhaland demand since almost the entire population of Darjeeling is fighting for a separate state.”
On the other hand, Bhattacharya also stated that a separate state would not solve all the problems of the people in a particular region.

A wholesome development of the oppressed and exploited people cannot be achieved without bringing to end various forms of exploitation present in the society “including intense class exploitation,” he noted.

The press release also condemns the suppressive measures of the TMC government stating this is an indication of autocratic rule. Bhattacharya also criticised the erstwhile CPI (M)-led government for applying repressive measures to crush the Gorkhaland movement during the 80s.

He said the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council was nothing more than a few rights granted and added, “We are vehemently opposing the blueprint of the present government, which is following the footsteps of the earlier government, in suppressing the peoples’ movement in the Hills”.

The MKP general secretary has advised the state government to go for discussions instead of applying coercion and suggested measures such as referendum can be chosen to ascertain the Hills people’s aspirations.
