JAMMU: While the country celebrated the Independence Day, three Indian Army jawans and a civilian were injured in indiscriminate firing from across the border in Poonch on Thursday, with no curb on ceasefire violations from Pakistan, making it the 12th time in the past five days of unprovoked aggression. The injured were shifted to different hospitals.
Pakistani troops fired along LoC at several Indian posts in Balakote belt of Poonch from 6.30am onwards with automatic weapons, rockets and mortar shells in which an 82-mm mortar fired by Pakistan troops fell in Sanjote forward area of Mendhar tehsil resulting in injury to Pervez Ahmed, a porter.
A rocket fell and exploded on a cowshed in Basonia village of Mendhar resulting in death of a dozen cattle.
Indian troops retaliated with heavy calibre weapons and the intermittent firing continued until the time of filing this report.
Defence spokesman in Jammu, S N Acharya, said the Pakistani army started unprovoked firing at Indian posts in Mendhar from 06:30am. "Own troops retaliated immediately with heavy calibre weapons," he said.
SSP, Poonch, Shamsheer Hussain, confirmed injury to the porter Pervez Ahmed who was admitted to Government Medical College in Jammu for specialized treatment.
Meanwhile, the defence PRO said earlier Pakistani troops had violated the ceasefire and fired at Indian posts along LoC in Mendhar sub-sector of Poonch at around 9pm on Tuesday as well.
"Noticing the suspected movement the infantry, artillery and BSF fired," he said, adding, "Search operations of the area are in progress since the report received."
Pakistan Rangers had targeted Narainpur border outpost along the international border in Samba on August 13 and also targeted fired at forward posts in Hamirpur, Balakote and Mankote in Poonch. Before Thursday's ceasefire violations on LoC and IB, there were three ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces on August 12 when their troops fired at Durga battalion of Poonch.
Pakistani troops have fired thousands of rounds of heavy ammunition since August 6 when the conflagration at the border began, killing five Army jawans so far.
