DARJEELING (INDIA), AUG 26 -With the Gorkhaland movement gaining momentum, the reopening of educational institutions in Darjeeling has become uncertain. Schools and colleges have been hardest hit due to continued protests for a separate Gorkhaland state.
Educational institutions in Darjeeling Hills have been closed for a month due to the protest led by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha. The GJM has assured that schools will reopen from the first week of September but it is now uncertain with the movement continuing unabated.
The state government has been allegedly using schools to accommodate over 2,000 security personnel deployed to the area. “We are committed to reopen the schools by September but chances appear slim with the movement picking up,” said a GJM leader.
The GJM faces flak for “playing with the future of thousands of students”. Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, has been expressing serious concern over the closure of educational institutions.
Meanwhile, Nepali students studying in Darjeeling Hills started returning home as the agitating parties have announced to involve students in their protest.
Thousands of students from Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, China, Netherlands, the UK and the US study in the three sub-divisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong.
