The state government is determined to wrest control of the state of affairs in the region, informed the sources. It is likely to deploy additional companies of the CRPF after holding discussions with officials of the district administration.

On the other hand, GJM chief Bimal Gurung has warned the government would be held responsible for the consequences if it tried to resort to forceful suppression of the ongoing agitation.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata High Court has challenged the GJM-led strike with advocate Ramprasad Sarkar lodging a case citing harm to public welfare. He has also mentioned in his writ petition the Supreme Court has termed the strike as ‘unconstitutional’.

A case has been lodged in this regard at a division bench headed by justices Arun Kumar Mitra and Jaymalya Bagchi. The hearing is likely to commence next week.

Further, as the Terai or plains region is also being adversely affected by the strike in the Hills, local outfit Amra Bangali has written to the President demanding a ban on the GJM and arrest of GJM chief Bimal Gurung and general secretary Roshan Giri.

In another development on Monday evening, the district TMC organised a peace rally in Siliguri, which was led by North Bengal Development minister Gautam Deb. Speaking on the occasion, Deb said strict measures would be undertaken against those residents of the Hills if they do not pay electricity bills and if government employees fail to report for work.
