The UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva has voiced concern over the sufferings of people in Darjeeling Hills due to an ongoing agitation for a separate Gorkhaland state, a human rights organisation in Darjeeling said. The Commission has also expressed its willingness to send a team to Darjeeling if required to take stock in case of any human rights violations.
The Human Rights Protection Association (HRPA) in Darjeeling has sought help from the Geneva Commission in documenting cases of human rights violation in Darjeeling Hills.
Andrew Gurung, president of Darjeeling chapter of HRPA, said: “We are not intervening on political issues, but the general people agitating for their legitimate rights in a democratic and peaceful manner should not be tortured by anyone. We are concerned over their welfare and will work for them.”
In the coming week, HRPA’s national chairman Samim Ahamed will hold a press conference in Delhi to highlight the issue of Darjeeling Hills to the national media. Andrew also informed that the members of the association are updating every detail about the agitation in Darjeeling Hills to the officials in Geneva.
Purnakala Thapa and Lochan Gurung along with few other members are closely monitoring the cases of human rights violation in Darjeeling Hills, he said.
Thapa, convener and press secretary of HRPA Darjeeling, said: “I appeal people to raise their voices peacefully and to keep calm and maintain during a rally or demonstration.” She also informed that the victims or their family members can contact HRPA office at second floor, 3/C, Kutchery Road, Darjeeling, for any assistance.
