HRPA Reports 22 September 2013: The Darjeeling Police today organized a debate over an issue of 'Human Rights Violation' the topic being"Human Rights Violation by the Police is reflection on the Inefficiency of the Police'.
The participants were all police officers from different divisions of Darjeeling District/RAF and we at HRPA were invited as guest and one of the executive member Ms. Sangamitra Bomzon (legal cell) was appointed as a jury, besides her there was Mr.Dhurba Kumar Tamang (retired Deputy Superintendent,DJ Police), Mr. Sudeep Sarkar(IPS Additional Superintendent ,DJ Police) and Mr.Binod Agarwal(M.A. LLB Police Prosecutor and Special Public Prosecutor for West Bengal and National Investigation Agency) who was on the jury lists.
The debate helped in understanding the core issues as to how and why human rights is often violated during activities carried out by the Police relating to 'Law and Order' enforcement. We at HRPA were also able to convince the authorities to have a joint seminar with the Darjeeling Police on raising an awareness on 'Human Rights' which will take place not before Dusherra and will be open to the public.
Though today's debate was only by invitation, however we have suggested that this should be open to all so that there is a better understand amongst the general public. The initiative taken by the Darjeeling Police is commendable and highly appreciative. We at HRPA thank the Darjeeling Police and hope it will bring down the violations in regards to human rights to minimum.
