The Trinamul Congress today said it would hold a rally in Kurseong on September 16 to send the message of peace and amity and push for the proper functioning of the GTA Sabha.
“It is good that normalcy has been restored in the Darjeeling hills and the strike has been withdrawn. As our party had announced earlier, we will hold a march in Kurseong on September 16 to disseminate the message of peace, amity and solidarity among the hill people. We will talk about the need for peace to carry on with development projects taken up by the state government in the hills and seek the smooth functioning of the GTA Sabha,” said Darjeeling district Trinamul president and north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb.
Trinamul had said on September 5 that the party would hold “peace” rallies in Kalimpong and Darjeeling.
Sources in the party today said the Kalimpong rally had been shelved for “political reasons” and the date of the Darjeeling meeting would be fixed after the Kurseong event was over.
The announcement of the Kurseong rally has come a day after the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee decided to suspend the strike till October 20.
Deb also said today that chief minister Mamata Banerjee would visit the hills after the coming festive season. “Although the trip is yet to be confirmed, we have information that the chief minister is likely to go to the hills again in November.”
On the election of the chief executive of the GTA Sabha, the minister said steps would be taken by the state government according to the provisions of the GTA Act. The elected members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had abstained from a meeting convened on September 4 to choose a new chief executive.
The Trinamul leader also said he would hold a meeting with the office-bearers of the party in the hills.
“In the next couple of days, we will sit with Trinamul leaders from the hills to discuss the party’s prospective activities there. I will also go to Latpanchar and visit the house of Ram Subba (a Trinamul worker who was assaulted by suspected Morcha supporters on September 3 while he was returning from Mamata Banerjee’ felicitation programme). We feel poor people in remote areas like Sitong and Latpanchar (under Kurseong subdivision) need some more assistance. The party will distribute food grains among the people there,” said Deb said.
