The DRNM’s contention is that the region is peaceful and a democratic form of agitation for statehood was in progress and deployment of forces makes matters worse only.

“Why should state and central forces be deployed in the hills when no untoward incidents are taking place despite the ongoing agitation? The presence of security forces is only creating an atmosphere of fear and mistrust in people. We demand these forces be recalled immediately for the good of the hills,” said DRNM secretary Sanjila Ghisingh.

She added indulgence in unlawful activities by security forces was creating tension and panic among womenfolk here.

With the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha launching an agitation in July following the announcement of a Telangana state, companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and SSB along with state security forces have been deployed in the hills.

On September 28, the molestation incident of a minor by a RAF constable led to a clash between the security forces and the public including students. The GJM leadership has already faxed a letter to home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde demanding withdrawal of the security forces. The Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee too has voiced its angst.

The DRNM deputation has also pointed out that the Lok Sabha speaker, leader of the Opposition in Parliament and the state’s chief minister are all women and atrocities on womenfolk need to be addressed with utmost urgency.
