A constable of the state armed police on duty at the Darjeeling district correctional home shot himself with his service rifle in the wee hours of Tuesday. Shyamal Barma (40) a constable deputed at the Darjeeling correctional home was said to be in a depressed state for a few days.
Thupden Rapchi Bhutia, the correctional home superintendent said “He (Barma) spoke to me yesterday evening and told me that he was depressed without citing any reasons. He in fact even told me that he was feeling irritated when any one spoke to him.”
Barma who hailed from Toofanganj in Cooch Behar was posted at Dali in Darjeeling. He was generally known to be a calm person, but before killing himself, he was heard shouting abuses and even fired two to three rounds in the air, according to other policemen in duty this morning.
Although the exact reason for the suicide has not been established, it is speculated that the constable had family problems and was upset about it for a few days. The body has been sent to the district hospital for postmortem.
