Kurseong - stray dog Alarming population growth

The stray dog population in Kurseong has increased to an alarming number, but the concerned authorities are yet to take any action. In their defence, the authorities say the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animal Act, 1960 and many NGOs working for the prevention of cruelty towards animals, have hindered their efforts to curb the increase in the number of stray dogs in town. Moreover, the Kurseong Municipality does not have the funds, manpower and equipment required, they add.

When asked, a municipality official said like other municipalities in the hills, Kurseong municipality too is concerned about the rising number of stray dogs, but the Act and animal protection organizations are hampering their efforts. He further said the municipality would need manpower and equipment to sterilise the stray dogs to control their population, but are short of funds. The municipality will inform the concerned officials again regarding the issue, the official added.

The population of stray dogs has been increasing in large numbers over the last few years, while at many places instances of dog attacks have also been reported. According to sources at the Kurseong hospital, many people have come to the hospital for dog bite treatments, while some have even been diagnosed with rabies.
