GNLF questions Gurung on his recent speech in Darjeeling

The leadership of the Gorkha National Liberation Front today raised questions on the recent statements made by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung. GNLF Kurseong branch spokesperson Daya Dewan said the activities and recent statements of Gurung reveal his true colours and clearly demonstrate the type of leader he is.

Dewan said he is unclear about what Gurung wanted to convey to the people during his recent speech in Darjeeling. “He first talks in support of the formation of development boards and again speaks against such a move,” he said.

During a programme in Darjeeling on Wednesday, Gurung had said the formation of community development boards would lead to division within the Gorkha community. But later on during the same programme, he said he welcomes the move and appeals to the government for formation of development boards.

The GNLF leader added Gurung has also been demanding tribal status for the entire Gorkha community barring the Chettri-Bahun and Scheduled Caste communities. He said Gurung and his henchmen have been repeatedly requesting the CM for granting tribal status for hill residents.

Dewan pointed out that by demanding tribal status for the Gorkhas, the GJM has been indirectly or directly demanding the Sixth Schedule status, the principal demand of the GNLF. He urged Gurung to refrain from misleading the people through his “dirty” politics.
