Nepal and India trekking route opened

Seeking to strengthen tourism ties between Nepal and India, a trekking route was today opened between Ramitey Dara in Mirik and Baundangi in the neighbouring country under the active initiative of the Salamander Tourism Welfare Society.

Nepal and India trekking route opened
The first-of-its-kind route will offer tourists the opportunity of entering Nepal through Darjeeling while enjoying the beauty of the sub-Himalayan belt on both sides of the border.

The first group to take the route comprised visitors from Kolkata led by STWS secretary Ashwini Tamang and members Dipen Giri and Sanjiv Thapa. The trekkers took leave in the morning after wished good luck by ward councilor Bikram Golay. Tamang said the group was accorded a grand welcome by the Nepal’s Tourism Board and other industry stakeholders of that country.

The new international trekking route has come into being following the efforts of the STWS and Nepal’s tourism board. Observers feel that if the GTA tourism department also comes up with similar strategies to promote cross-border trekking, the initiative will scale unprecedented heights.
