It's raining bounties for the six North Bengal districts ahead of the Lok Sabha polls as Mamata Banerjee goes all out to win over the people - from Gorkhas to adivasis, and from Rajbanshis to middle-class Bengalis.
Holding the first cabinet meeting at Uttar Kanya - the long cherished north Bengal secretariat at Siliguri - the CM slammed the Left parties for ignoring health, transport, homestead land and industry in North Bengal.
She announced a health directorate for the region and said that 1,850 vacant government posts in North Bengal would be filled up. Sixty-five new posts will be created for Jalpaiguri correctional home and spinning mills revived.
Malda's Buniyadpur will have a new municipality. In a bid to address the problems of the poor adivasis and Rajbonshis who have lost their land over the course of time, Mamata set up a committee under North Bengal affairs minister Gautam Deb to come up with a model for the "Nijo Griha Nijo Bhumi" policy.
"The government will distribute 52,000 land pattas to the poor. Those who can afford will have to purchase the land. I want the committee to submit its report by February 20," the CM said.
The government isn't also missing out the Hills people. State officials hinted that the government will release Rs 2.86 crore to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration for infrastructure development in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The money will be spent on roads, sewerage and drainage and streetlights.
More than 30 ministers attended the first cabinet meeting in Siliguri. The chief minister announced that Uttar Kanya secretariat will get an officer in the additional chief secretary rank.
