Ace footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, the Trinamool Congress candidate from Darjeeling constituency, today met leaders of the Sikkim Pradesh Trinamool Congress at the party head office in Tadong, Gangtok.
Addressing the media for the first time in Sikkim as a politician, Bhaichung said, “I will work sincerely, honestly and transparently for the people of the hills. Our target is to maintain peace, bring development and to create opportunities.”
He also urged the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front and other political parties in Sikkim to support a TMC candidate from the state so that the people’s voice can be heard in Parliament.
“As Sikkim sends just one MP each to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, their voice often goes unheard in Parliament, especially on important issues. However, if the SPTMC sends its MP from Sikkim, his voice will become one with the voices of 42 other TMC legislators to give the issue in question a louder voice,” Bhaichung reasoned.
Downplaying the skepticism of him not being a son-of-soil of Darjeeling, the football star said such comments are just ‘political plays’ by rival parties for personal gains.
On his entry into politics by joining the TMC, he explained, “The TMC is a party that is trying to bring in development to the hills and what the region needs at the moment is development. The entire hills have been neglected for a long time. The agitations started because of lack of opportunity. It all comes down to a better future and the TMC is a party that assures peace and development in the hills.”
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters from the Sikkim Chalak Morcha and 30 other organisations joined the TMC today and pledged support to Bhaichung.
