Siliguri, March 23: A fire broke out in the storeroom of the Siliguri branch of State Bank of India (SBI) on Hill Cart Road this evening. No injuries were reported and the damage to the property is yet to be assessed.
Four fire engines from Siliguri fire station doused the flames in one hour.
SBI sources said around 6.40pm, some employees working in the branch noticed smoke bellowing out of the storeroom on the fourth floor. The building has six floors.
“They informed me over the phone and I informed the fire brigade immediately,” said Nabin Kumar Das, the chief manager of the branch.
The building that has the main branch of SBI in Siliguri has eight to 10 shops on the ground floor.
The bank operates from the other floors.
“The fire broke out in the room where scrapped furniture and some other items are kept. The record room of the branch is next to that room. The canteen is on the same floor. The flames did not spread to any other room,” said B.P. Dhar, the station officer of the Siliguri fire station.
After the fire broke out, traffic on one side of Hill Cart Road was restricted and several shops downed shutters.
“It seems there will be no problems in regular bank operations from tomorrow,” said Das.
