The second day of the ongoing flower show in Mirik today ended amid a rush of hundreds of flower lovers and tourists. The show organised by the Mirik-Soureni Orchid Growers at the Krishnanagar Reception Centre has on display 300 varieties of Cymbidium Orchids. Visitors from Sikkim, Kolkata, Assam and even Europe spoke highly of the farmers and jotted positive comments in the visitors’ book.
However, the organising committee and farmers rue the lack of government assistance for flower cultivation even as horticultural officer Satyaprakash Singh on Friday assured them of providing all possible help.
Mirik-Soureni Orchid Growers’ Society president DP Rai, vice-president Amar Duimali, organising committee secretary Bhim Rai and general secretary Prem Kumar Rai said if the government wishes, it can transform Mirik into an ‘Orchid Hub’ of the Northeast region. They further urged the government to create a favourable market for orchid sales.
