Sikkim - Woman from Calcutta dies in a crash, 8 injured

A 56-year-old woman from Calcutta died and eight others were injured after the SUV they were travelling in fell 150ft below the road near Rabong in South Sikkim last evening.


The tourists were travelling as a group and were on their way to Siliguri after a vacation in Sikkim. Purnima Das, a housewife, died while she was being taken to the district hospital in Namchi. The distance between Namchi and Rabong is 35km.

The injured are Banshu Das, 28, Victor Vaidya, 32, Manish Chakraborty, 35, Pranit Chakraborty, 28, Anirup Vaidya, 2, Sharmista Chakraborty, 35, Antra Vaidya, 32 and the driver Bikash Chettri.

The incident happened at Rakey, 5km from Rabong. All the tourists are residents of Calcutta.The group had reached Rabong on March 18.

A police officer at Rabong said it was raining heavily when the accident happened.

“The vehicle had fallen almost 150ft down the road. Local people and the police rescued the injured and took them to the hospital.”

A source at the district hospital in Namchi, said: “Purnima had been brought dead. The others had injuries and were referred to Siliguri.”

The injured were admitted to a private nursing home in Siliguri around 7pm.
