Jolt for GJM, Hill farmers to vote for Mahendra P.Lama

Kalimpong: Independent candidate Dr. Mahendra P.Lama received a major boost two days ahead of April 17 polls when the hills and plains would shield the fate of candidates when suddenly this evening, the Kalimpong Kirshak Kalyan Sangathan (KKKS)—a conglomeration of hill farmers club announced its support to him.

The KKKS has 330 farmers club, 100 Self Help groups and 100 joint liability groups under its head. The independent camp of Lama supported by parties like ABGL, CPRM, GRC, apolitical body the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh and DDUDF feels that the support from the farmers is a blessing in disguise and could baffle the top players in the fray vis-a-vis TMC’s Bhaichung Bhutia and BJP’s S.S.Ahaluwalia.

“We have been speaking about an able candidate from the hills who can carry forward our demand. Considering all the factors Dr. Lama is the right person,” said Bishnu Chettri, the secretary of the organization. The organization has claimed to have votes anything between 70- 80 thousand under them.

If the claim for 70-80 thousand is right, then this according to observers would serve a major jolt for the GJM backed BJP in the long run.

The Secretary said, “Gorkhaland is a possible demand and we need to unite for it. Most of the central party leadership has been playing with the emotions of the hill parties. We already saw what happened by relying on National leaders. Lama is a perfect candidate in context to the Lok Sabha polls”.

Lama expressed happiness and thanked Sangathan for their support. He said it will make a huge difference. “We wanted to go to remote places and village but could not due to lack of time but the support of KKS has overcome the problem as it works on ground,” added Lama.
