Kurseong Gorkha Hills Sports Association (KGHSA) will be soon organizing a marathon to support and boost the lives of senior citizens of the town. KGHSA’s senior member Nirmal Gurung said his organization has always been holding such activities for the betterment of society and this time the organization has given impetus to raise the quality of lives of the retired senior citizens of the area. The association will be organizing a marathon for both male and female of above 60 years on April 30. The race will start from the St. Alphonsus School and end at Monteviot Ground.
The KGHSA representative claimed the senior citizen marathon is the first such race to be organised in the hills. “Even though the distance that will be covered is short, we hope it will inspire more elderly to participate in such sporting events in the future and also encourage the young ones to put emphasis on sports,” he added
As per the organizing committee most elderly shy away from sporting activities and retire themselves from a life of robust activity following retirement. Hence to change this mindset as well as to show them their lives are important to the society they live in, they have started with this initiative. “The senior citizens with their experience of life must play a pivotal role in the shaping of a society and hence their participation in all forms of activities is important,” Gurung stressed.
The association members also informed that so far 30 senior citizens of above 60 years have already confirmed their participation for the proposed marathon. They hope the participation by more elderly in carrying this responsibility of change will inspire many more to come forward and in time, reform society in their own way. The association expects 50 participants for the marathon. To make participation more accessible, the organizers have decided to let late entrants to come directly to St. Alphonsus School. All participants will be presented with token certificates and the first three finishers with trophies.
