The 19th Battalion of the Seema Sashastra Bal today held a seminar on ‘Role of the SSB in invigorating Indo-Nepal Relations’ here at the sector headquarters.
The Indo-Nepal border stretches across 99km and is dotted by 18 border outposts. Taking this into consideration, the seminar was organised to create a better understanding between the SSB and media persons in terms of the Indo-Nepal border and also to inform the latter about the facilities being provided by the SSB to those living along the border including various development and social activities.
The SSB monitors the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders and has been doing so for several decades. In order to maintain friendly ties between locals living along the border, the SSB conducts awareness and medical camps and also provides computers, books and other necessary items to the needy.
During the seminar, SSB personnel noted the scenario along the Indo-Nepal border is by and large peaceful and also claimed illegal activities such as human trafficking and smuggling are rate compared to other border areas.
The SSB officials also spoke about the poor conditions of roads in Ribdi, Uttarey and Nambhu, places that border Nepal, adding electricity and water problems are a regular affair in the areas. They said road conditions across the border are much better, while only a few outposts of the SSB are connected by road.
SSB deputy commandant MK Singh said the morale of the jawans is positive as officials visit them regularly and take care of their basic needs of food, clothing and phone connectivity including their leaves.
PIB director CK Dorjee, the chief guest at the seminar, lauded the SSB’s services as it provides both security in border areas and keeps an eye on illegal activities. He said Nepal and India share a common culture and traditions and as India is the bigger of the two, it wants Nepal to sustain politically and economically. (PIB)
