Indian Gorkha shooter Jitu Rai won the first silver medal for India in men's 10m air pistol in the ISSF World Cup in Munich on Wednesday.
The Gorkha shooter, who had finished sixth in Free Pistol in Munich last year, finished with 199.4 points after losing in the battle of nerves to Pablo Carrera of Spain who took the gold with 201.3 points. European junior champion Paulo Korostylov of Ukraine bagged the bronze with a score of 178.4 points.
Former World Cup medalist India's Prakash Nanjappa settled for the seventh place after bowing out in the early stages of the final. Earlier, Nanjappa had qualified in third place for the final with 584 points while Rai finished sixth with a tally of 583 points.
It was India's first medal in the competition after Olympic bronze medalist Gagan Narang narrowly failed to make the final in rifle prone event on Tuesday.
Jitu is the top ranked Indian shooter in both 10 m Air Pistol and 50 m Free Pistol, and has qualified for another world cup in Changwon, Korea in the 50 m Free Pistol event.
Jitu is also one of India’s key prospects for a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, July 2014 and Asian Games in Incheon, September 2014.
