GNLF rally in town for reintroduction of DGHC

Continuing its political activities in the hills, the GNLF today organised a rally in the town demanding the reintroduction of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council until the implementation of the Sixth Schedule. The rally was part of the party’s plan to hold such political activities every Saturday across the hills to voice its demands. The rally after circumnavigating the town ended at Damber Chowk and transformed into a party meeting.

The GNLF Kalimpong Sub-divisional unit president Mauris Kalikotay explained the reason for the demand for the reintroduction of the DGHC and various other details related to the party’s key demands. “It has been clearly motioned in Section-10 of the agreement on the Sixth Schedule that unless the regulation is implemented in the Hills, the DGHC remains the administrative body of the region. Therefore, the GNLF is trying to provide the constitutionally accredited administration in the form of DGHC to the Gorkhas through these rallies and other activities,” he explained.

Claiming the Hills can only saved if the DGHC is reinstated, Kalikotay said the GTA is an unconstitutional body and can be dissolved anytime by the state government. Meanwhile, during the course of the meeting he also announced Dipankar Lama as the Kalimpong town committee president. He said Lama has been appointed as per the directives of GNLF supremo Subhash Ghisingh.  Further, Lama has also been directed to form committees for all the 23 wards of Kalimpong Sub-division.
