After Delhi is it now Bangalore, a guy from North-East has been beaten into a pulp in Bangalore for not speaking the native language. Is this Unity in diversity? Michael Lamjathang Haokip, a 24-year-old engineering student from Manipur was thrashed in Bangalore's Indiranagar area on Tuesday night. Michael was attacked by a gang of men who demanded he speak in Kannada.
He got injuries to his back, legs and forehead. A month ago Michael's relatives were also attacked by the locals of the area.
"They said when you are in Karnataka, you have to speak in Kannada, otherwise get out. They hit me with stones when I ignored them. I had to get five stitches. I have filed a complaint. We were speaking in Tharu language, when they approached us and asked us to talk in Kannada."
This is not the only instance of Racial discrimination against North-East. How can the nation forget the incident of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania in the Delhi who was beaten to death by some shopkeepers following an altercation sparked by their taunts on his hairstyle earlier in this year.
We, Indian Gorkhas, strongly condemn the racial discrimination and attack on Manipuri student in Bangalore who was told to speak in Kannada.
"Gorkha Students,JNU condemns in strongest possible words this ugly incident of racist attack on student from Manipur in Bangalore.This incident has clearly brought in light the oppressiveness of majoritarian idea of nationalism and entrenched racial prejudices in so called cosmopolitan city of Bangalore. Only uncompromising collective resistance can break this silence on this issue and democratize spaces for voices and aspiration of the oppressed" -Dawa Sherpa
It is come to known that the 3 accused have been arrested, however, the arrest of these three goons would not end the issue. The government and the concerned authorities in India should take this seriously and work towards measures to stop this hate crime that has been taking place across the nation.
