Speaking in a discussion on setting up of the proposed Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Champaran in Bihar, Darjeeling MP Shri. SS Ahluwalia placed the demand for a Central University to be formed in the GTA region as early as possible.
He congratulated the people of Champaran and the Government on the move to establish a new Central University in the district, and stated that, "I represent the people of Darjeeling, where the quality of higher education is much backward than the rest of the country. There is no University in the hills because of which the students from the hills have to travel to far off places like Delhi, Kolkata and Shantiniketan to attain higher education.But recently, a young student from Sikkim was sexually assaulted, and seeing the behavior of the Vice-Chancellor towards the victim, the hill students are terrified of going to these places for higher education, and are fearful about their personal safety and security."
He further stated that, "Under the GTA agreement the formation of a Central University has been mentioned, and it was a promise made by the UPA. I request PMO India Shri. Narendra Modi and the Hon'ble Human Resources Development Minister Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani to kindly fulfill the promise made in the GTA agreement"
He added, "Children and students from the hill region should be able to continue and complete their higher education in the hills, for which I request the government to expedite the process of establishing a Central University in the Darjeeling region."
