Gorkha museum and Community Bhawanat to come up in Dharamsala

The state government will construct a museum and Gorkha community bhawan at Dari near Dharamsala. The proposed museum will help preserve the rich culture and heritage of the Gorkha community in Himachal.

The decision was taken at the 13th state-level Gorkha Kalyan Board meeting held in Dharamsala today. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

The CM said a relaxation of 2 inches had already been given in height and chest measurement to the youth of the Gorkha community in sepoy recruitment in the state Police Department. He directed the Revenue Department to issue sub-caste certificate to the Gorkha community for enabling them to take benefit in the Army recruitment.

The CM also directed the Language and Cultural Department to provide the remaining funds to complete the showcase of late Master Mitrasen Thapa Museum at Totarani near Dharamsala. He said the Gorkha community had been included in the Other Backward Classes in the state and they were being provided 12 per cent reservation in direct recruitment to the 1st and 2nd grade posts while 18 per cent reservation in the 3rd and 4th grade posts.

Virbhadra said to provide more government jobs to the OBCs, the state government had enhanced annual income of creamy layer from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. He said the state could only make a balanced and speedy development if all communities and area got equal opportunities.
The state government endeavoured to provide better education, health and employment opportunities to all and many initiatives had been taken in this direction during the past two years, he said.

The CM directed the Urban Development Department to provide permanent houses to families affected by landslide in Terra Lines, Dharamsala.

He said the government would consider opening a football academy in Dharamsala, besides promoting volleyball. The state government would provide assistance in organising annual sports tournaments for the Gorkha community.

Virbhadra directed the administration to take the construction of a road to Chandmari village with the Army authorities. He also directed to provide Rs 12 lakh for the construction of the Master Mitrasen Thapa Museum road and. He also directed the Forest Department to provide forest clearance of 7 biswa land for Gorkha Bhawan, Kakira, in Chamba district.

The CM said that eligible landless Gorkha families could apply to the Deputy Commissioners concerned for getting 3 biswas of land in rural areas and 2 biswas in urban areas for construction of house.

The Chief Minister said persons who were living for more than 30 years in Himachal Pradesh could also get 150 sq m to 500 sq m of land for construction of house in the state.

The Chief Minister said the next meeting of the Gorkha Kalyan Board would be convened in Shimla.
Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dhani Ram Shandil said Rs 298 crore was being spent by the Social Justice and Empowerment Department under various schemes during current fiscal, while Rs 1,015 crore was being spent under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan.

Maintaining that his government was committed for welfare of Gorkha community, chief minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday said appropriate budget would be provided to construct a museum and Gorkha Community Bhawan at Dari near Dharamsala town in Kangra district.

“Apart from providing community services, this museum will also help in preserving the rich culture and legacy of the Gorkha community,” the chief minister said, while presiding over the 13th state-level Gorkha Kalyan Board meeting here.

Paying rich tributes to the Gorkha martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of country, Virbhadra Singh said Gorkha people were known for their bravery and warriorship.

The CM directed the language and cultural department to provide money to complete showcase of late Master Mitrasen Thapa Museum at Totarani village near Dharamsala. He said that the community had been included in other backward classes (OBC) category in the state and they were being provided 12% and 18% reservation in direct recruitment to the various categories of posts. “To provide more government jobs and benefit of various development schemes to the OBCs, the state government has enhanced annual income of creamy layer from Rs. 4.50 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh,” the chief minister said.

Virbhadra directed the urban development department to provide permanent houses to the landslide affected families of Tihra Line village in Dharamsala.

“The government is considering opening a football academy here and all possible assistance will be provided in organising the annual sports tournaments of Gorkha people,” the chief minister added.
