Two persons who had allegedly duped a student from Nadia of Rs 9 lakh, by promising her admission to Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, was arrested from Siliguri last night.
The duo have been identified as Kashim Ali, 35, a resident of Malda and Alamgir, 23, from Islampur. While Kashim was impersonating as the Sikkim Manipal University representative, Alamgir was his cohort. They were staying at a hotel when they were arrested by the Siliguri metropolitan police.
The duo had offered the girl admission to a postgraduate course in Gynaecology and Obstetrics in the institute. A source in Sikkim said Rituparna Ghosh, from Nadia district in West Bengal, was contacted by a person on January 18.
"A man called D.K. Jha told the girl that Rs 9 lakh was needed for admission. He also asked the girl to come to Sikkim with the money and her testimonials," a source said.
On January 23, the imposter and his cohort met the girl and her parents at Bagdogra airport and took them to the university in Sikkim.
"They asked the girl to give them the cash and said that it had to be deposited at the college counter. The girl and her parents were asked to wait at a hall and they fled with the money," he said.
On the same day, the girl filed a complaint at the Sadar police station in Gangtok.
Yesterday evening, the Bhaktinagar police in Siliguri got to know that a person in Siliguri, who wanted to admit his son to Sikkim Manipal University, was contacted by a man called D.K. Jha who had asked for Rs 5 lakh for admission.
"This left the family suspicious and they informed us.We reached the hotel at 10.30pm and could find the accused. There was also another person who was impersonating as his driver. The duo were sent to Jalpaiguri court today and we have sought police remand," said a police source.
