The contributions made by Team Run With Roshni in sharing the “Gorkhali are Indians too” message, will indeed someday be remembered and celebrated in the future. But at present what they are doing, has made millions of people across India and the world sit up and take notice of them, and also the Gorkhalis of India and the identity crisis faced by Gorkhalis in India.
On January 26, 2015 two members of team ‘Run With Roshni,’ Mr. Runesh Tamang (31) and Mr. Kamal Thapa (43) joined the “I Love My Tiranga” run.
The “I Love My Tiranga” run, originally envisioned by Mr. Khalid Queresi of the Landmark Education celebrates the spirit of patriotism, nationalism, our beloved Tiranga, India our nation, and promotes the feeling of “Indianness,” and seeks to ensure that just like the religious books - Gita, Koran, Bible, Guru Granth and so on - each home in India has a Tiranga to celebrate the 'Spirit of India' with.
To include people from all parts of India in the run, they had invited Ms. Roshni Rai and her team members to participate in this run from Mumbai to Delhi via Gujrat. In the invitation, Ms. Roshni saw a golden opportunity to spread more awareness about Gorkhalis in India. So she invited two of her strongest performers Mr. Kamal Thapa of Kalimpong and Mr. Runesh Tamang of Pala Busty in Kalimopng sub-division to participate.
The run was flagged off with Mr. Khalid Queresi running from the Gateway of India to Marine Drive with Tiranga in his hands, which he handed over to Ms. Roshni Rai, who then ran from there to Sayadri – the official residence of Maharastra CM. The “I Love my Tiranga” relay 2015 was then officially flagged off by Maharastra CM with Ms. Roshni Rai running upto Bandra with the Indian Flag. She says, “I started running with the flag from Marine Drive around 10am. It was an awesome experience to run with India’s flag in Mumbai’s road on Republic Day…”
That is where Runesh and Kamal joined the rally.
Son of Mrs Sanmati and Mr. Daljit Tamang, Runesh does not have any formal education. He only started to run, after seeing his friends from the village practice, he was 21 years old. In 2011, he participated in a marathon organized by the Banwasi Samiti in Siliguri and won it, which qualified him to run for another Banwasi Samiti marathon held in Pune in 2012, once again he won the race and won Rs 45,000 cash prize. He knew he could compete with the best, but he did not know how to compete at big races.
On hearing about his Pune rally, a friend of Ms. Roshni Rai contacted her had informed her about Runesh and his amazing performances so far. Rest as they say is history. So far, Runesh has participated in some of the major tournaments in India – Mumbai Marathon, Hyderabad Marathon, Chennai Marathon and now “I Love My Tiranga Relay 2015.”
Son of Mrs. Ganga Maya and Late. Padam Bahadur Thapa, Kamal has only studied till class 6. He started running back in 1990s as a hobby and has been a faithful runner. A chance meeting with a friend brought him to Pedong in 2011 where he attended the “Run with Roshni” workshop in October of that year. He was one of the 1st runners to join team “Run with Roshni” who came to run the Mumbai Half-Marathon in 2012.
Like Runesh, Kamal has also run many important races including the Mumbai Half Marathon, Hyderabad half Marathon, Chennai Half Marathon 5and now ““I Love My Tiranga Relay 2015.”
Throughout their participation in various races, Runesh, Kamal, Roshni and the other runners associated with team “Run with Roshni” have carried forward and spread one very important message - WE ARE GORKHAS AND PROUD TO BE INDIANS, JAI GORKHA, JAI HIND.’
Their sojourn through the “I Love My Tiranga Relay 2015” took them from Maharastra to Gujrat to Rajasthan and eventually Delhi. Along the way, thousands of people lined up to celebrate their run, and they got a chance to mingle with the locals, as well as celebrities – including the Chief Minister of Gujrat, the Prince of Mewar and so on.
From the people they met, many asked them this one question – “are you guys from Nepal?” and gladly they explained to the curious, how Nepali speaking people are Indians too. In these 20days while running from Mumbai to Delhi, they told many people about project ‘Run with Roshni’ through which they are seeking to brining awareness about ‘We are Gorkhas and proud to be Indians.’
The original plan for ‘I love my Tiranga’ team was to reach India Gate, Delhi on the 14th Feb, 2015 but due to the Oath taking Ceremony of Mr. Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Dehli, they had to postponed their date.
Sadly, Runesh and Kamal had train to Darjeeling on 14th Feb, 2015 evening. So Kamal and Runesh had to head back home, without attending the closing ceremony of ‘I Love my Tiranga Relay 2015.’
For twenty days, they ran 20km everyday carrying India’s flag.
They say in many places, people were asking them, ‘Are you from Nepal?’ And both of them explained to all that they speak Nepali but they are proud to be Indian and that they love Tiranga.
TheDC team SALUTES – RUNESH, KAMAL, ROSHNI and members of team ‘RUN with ROSHNI” who have not only inspired all of us to strive for asserting our identity, but have also shown how each and every one of us can contribute towards fighting for our identity at our own personal capacity.
