Permission granted for MBBS admission in North Bengal Medical College Siliguri

9:24 AM
Siliguri June 5: The Medical Council of India has granted permission to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri for conducting admission to all 150 MBBS seats, including 50 provisional ones, for the 2016-2017 academic session.

The nod comes with a rider that adequate infrastructure should be provided to students before the next inspection of the MCI scheduled for later this year.

Samir Ghosh Roy, the NBMCH principal, said the MCI had given permission for admission to 150 MBBS seats for the 2016-2017 academic session that starts from August.

"The 150 seats include 50 that have been granted to us on a temporary basis. The permission has been given with a condition that we have to complete the infrastructure required for accommodating 150 students, like hostels, lecture theatres and auditorium before the next visit of the MCI," he said.

This is the fourth year that the MCI has granted permission to the NBMCH to take admission to 150 MBBS seats.

Prior to granting the 50 additional seats in 2013, NBMCH used to take admission to 100 MBBS seats.

An NBMCH source said the permission had been granted on the basis of a report of a three-member MCI team that had visited NBMCH in March.

"The MCI team appeared quite satisfied with the progress of the work in setting up infrastructure. That is why the MCI has granted permission. Another team is likely to visit the medical college anytime between September and December and the authorities have been directed to complete all structures by then," said the source.

Darjeeling police to start a Career Counseling Cell for youths

7:51 PM
The Darjeeling police have decided to start a Career Counseling Cell for youths from Wednesday as they aim to reach out to them and rebuild lost confidence in the wake of the statehood agitation.

Public-police relations in the hills are at an all-time low. Numerous arrests and the September 28 clash with students have only worsened matters.

Nonetheless, the police department is keen to ensure the people do not lose faith. Counseling services will be provided at the town office for four hours every day with the police department appealing to all youths to visit the cell.

“There is lot of confusion among youths here as to job opportunities and their career. The CCC’s job will be to inform them about various job opportunities available, how to get them, and what needs to be done,” said Darjeeling Special IG Jawed Shamim.

At the outset, the CCC will start in Darjeeling sub-division and depending on the response it will be introduced in the remaining sub-divisions.

“We have decided to start in Darjeeling first. We will see how the response is and accordingly take it up in the remaining sub-divisions,” said Shamim.

The officer also said that in the event of a youth being selected for a job interview, the CCC would provide necessary assistance.

“We have officials who are pretty experienced and who have themselves faced interviews. Youths selected for job interviews will be helped by our officials on how to prepare and be ready to tackle the task,” the special IG said.

He also said the people of the hills have always cooperated and stray incidents should not be a deterrent to police-public relations.

“We always want to be in the best of terms with the people. Locals have always cooperated with the police and we want to help them and ensure our relation remains intact for a win-win situation,” said Shamim.

SC disapproves Common entrance exam held by the Medical Council

10:12 PM
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ruled that the common entrance exam held by the Medical Council of India or MCI will not continue because it is not empowered to do so.

SC disapproves Common entrance exam held by the Medical Council

Private medical and dental universities and colleges now have the right to conduct their own entrance exams for under-graduate and post-graduate degrees. Critics point out that in many of these institutions, admissions are sold instead of being based on merit.  Without a common entrance exam, they argue, the colleges will have a free run to sell seats.

The three judges who heard the case included Chief Justice Altamas Kabir. Two said that the council is not empowered to conduct the exam. One disagreed.

"Holding of National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) is legal, practical and is the need of the society. Hence, I have dissented," Justice Anil R Dave said.

The judges made it clear that the verdict will not affect the admissions which have already taken place.

The Press Trust of India reported that the Union Health Ministry, which has been conducting the common entrance exam since 2009, has sought legal opinion on whether it can file a review petition on the Supreme Court order.

"MBBS seats are sold upto 40 to 60 lakh...post-graduate seats are sold  for upto two crore rupees and this will get worse," said Dr Ravindranath who belongs to an organisation called Doctors for Social Equality, which is committed to eradicate "poverty and suffering" in Tamil Nadu.

But the management of private colleges, many of who had fought the common entrance exam, deny malpractices and say they must have the right to determine their own admission processes including exams.

Students also worry that they will now have to spend much more on traveling to different places for multiple entrance exams. Aravint Santhosh, who is 18 and studying in Chennai, said that students will now have to prepare for an array of exams for Delhi's famous AIIMs, the Armed Forces College, and others.
