Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh present seven demands to NDA government

The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) has written to the newly formed NDA or Modi government at the Centre seeking its attention on seven demands the organisation has listed.

In his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BGP national executive president Dr Enos Das Pradhan has noted the issue of a Gorkhaland state as the organisation’s principal demand. Apart from this, the BGP wants the central government to grant the right of ownership to the tea garden and cinchona plantation workers of Darjeeling district and the Dooars region.

Pradhan said one of the issues highlighted includes guaranteeing the safety of the Gorkha people who have been residing in the northeastern states of the country for generations. The BGP also wants state-run Doordarshan television to telecast programmes in the Nepali/Gorkha language in regions where the Gorkha people comprise the majority of the populace.

Further, the BGP wants the new government to consider appointing eligible members of the Gorkha community to the posts of governors and ambassadors. Pradhan also said he has asked the prime minister to grant special privileges to Gorkhas residing in various states of the country as minorities.

“We first met Mr Modi in Ahmedabad on March 15 last year and apprised him of the BGP’s seven demands. Now that he has become the prime minister, we believe it will be easier for us to pursue the issues,” said Pradhan.

BGP executive member R Moktan added the organisation plans to meet Modi very soon and discuss the seven demands with him.

Enos Das Pradhan, President, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), who recently declared BGP's support to M.P Lama in the upcoming Lok Sabha election came up with the following respond to GJM's request to support BJP in the election.

"Our response to GJMM President Shri Bimal Gurung's repeated invitation to our independent candidate Dr Mahendra P Lama to support BJP candidate Dr M Dr. Mahendra P Lama to support BJP" Said Enos Das Pradhan

1. Let GJM reject GTA,
2. Let BJP come out with a written commitment that they will bring a bill for creation of Gorkhaland within six months of coming to power in Delhi.

He further added "We do not want to repeat the same mistake we committed by trusting BJP and GJMM in 2009. We also do not want to repeat yet another mistake we committed by trusting GJMM on 12th August 2013 by joining Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee. Both BJP and GJMM have forfeited their right to ask for our confidence in them. Therefore we want action before we respond to Bimal's invitation. Ball is now thrown back to your courts, Bimaljee and Rajnathjee."

Rev. Dr. Enos Das Pradhan Backtracks says "(Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh) BGP has not supported Dr. Mahendra P Lama, but the Gorkhaland cause." Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh Working President C P Giri had accuses Rev Dr. Enos Das Pradhan of subverting BGP Constitution on his declaring BGP's support in favour of Independent candidate from Darjeeling, Dr. M P Lama.

After facing criticism for Bharatiya Gorkha Parsangh central committee members over the issue of Rev. Dr. Enos Das Pradhan 'arbitrarily' supporting Dr. Mahendra P Lama, Rev. Pradhan tried to clear the air by saying, "BGP has not supported Dr. Mahendra P Lama, but the Gorkhaland cause... formation of Gorkhaland is BGP's number one cause, and this is what has created the confusion..."

Declaring that there is no internal strife within BGP, Rev. Dr. Pradhan said, "the decision to support Dr. Lama was taken by the BGP West Bengal unit, as Dr. Lama is support's the demand for Gorkhaland."

This is indeed a marked difference in tone after Rev. Dr. Pradhan had announced BGP support for Dr. M P Lama publicly.

Enos Das Pradhan, chairman of  Darjeeling Dooars United Development Forum (DDUDF), [Prof. MP Lama's Foundation], reacted upon GJMM president Bimal Gurung seeking support of Prof. MP Lama for BJP. Enos Das Pradhan counters as:

A thought came to my mind after reading Bimal Gurung OFFICIAL post in the FB appealing an independent candidate Dr Mahendra Lama for support:
1. When a formal letter was sent to him by the DDUDF seeking support he did not even acknowledge that letter.
2. Later in the Press both Bimal and Roshan said that GJMM will not extend suppport to Dr. Lama.
3. Now GJMM has already decided to suppprt BJP for the reason best known to them, not necessarily for the cause of Gorkhaland as GJM is neither serious nor honest to the cause of Gorkhaland.
3. Dr. Lama is an independent candidate and if he wins (and he will) he can allign or support any party who comes to power in Delhi for the interest of greater cause of Gorkhaland.
4. In this manner supporting Dr. Lama will be a better option for all including GJM.
5. Hence, before it is too late GJM should withdraw their support to Mr. Alluwalia and extend support to Indepdent Dr Lama and come to an understanding with him in the larger interest of the cause of Gorkhaland.
5. If you continue supporting BJP and if BJP does not fulfill their comittment as done in the previous years the comunity will be losing another five years.
