Gorkhas living in Mumbai have time and again requested GTA to consider building a Gorkha Bhawan in Mumbai, but GTA has said that their priority right now is to build a Gorkha Bhawan in Vellore where most people from our region go for their treatment.

Extending their support to the cause members of asiiyalo voted in favour of extending support to Gorkha Ekta Sang Mumbai proposal for building a place for Gorkhalis to stay while they are in Mumbai for various causes.

The four-storey structure is expected to house 27 rooms along with a dormitory, library and a cafeteria spread over 1,935 sq ft  in the heart of the national capital. The purpose of erecting such a structure is for the benefit of members of the Gorkha community from the Darjeeling hills who need to visit Delhi frequently for various works.

It may be mentioned here that the construction of a Gorkha Bhawan figures prominently in the tripartite agreement signed between the State Government, the Centre and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in July, 2011.

“The Gorkha Bhawan in Delhi is one of the dream projects of the GTA.

When completed, the Bhawan will greatly benefit the people of the hills who often need to visit Delhi for various works including health issues. The lack of such a Bhawan forces our people to spend heavily on accommodation and food in Delhi, and now we are hopeful many will benefit immensely,” remarked GTA tourism department executive director Sonam Bhutia, adding the Bhawan is expected to be fully complete within the next 18 months.

Darjeeling MP Surendra Singh Ahluwalia, who was in Siliguri with some official work, was back in Delhi this afternoon in Gurung’s company. GTA sabhasads Roshan Giri, Dawa Lepcha and Anit Thapa and other officials comprise the GTA team presently camped in Delhi.

The GJM president reached Delhi on August 27 and is expected to return home afterSeptember 4-5. Party sources said Gurung will be meeting the union tribal minister to pursue the demand for granting scheduled tribe status to 11 communities, 10 from the hills and one from the Dooars in the plains.

Apart from the official itinerary, the GJM team on Thursday also met yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s disciple Bal Krishna at a programme. They are also expected to call on senior NDA leaders before returning home to the Darjeeling hills.

Sources said Gurung could rake-up the issue of a tripartite meeting following the state government’s invitation to the GTA for bipartite talks on September 2 in Kalimpong.

“Our party president may not attend talks with the State government, but our Sabhasads are expected to participate,” said one source. “However, Gurung could ask the Centre to call a tripartite talk to sort out issues in terms of transferring of departments and more powers to the council.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will arrive in Siliguri on September 1 and head to Kalimpong the following day to participate in the bipartite talk including a programme being organised by the Lepcha community.

Gorkha Bhawan Kolkata asked Rs 20,000 for 8 hrs from Gorkhali students from Darjeeling

Open letter from a Darjeeling Student to Bimal Gurung...

Dear Sir,

We just came to know from various media sources that your good-self - the GJM and GTA Chief Bimal Gurung Official will be laying the foundation stone for Gorkha Bhawan in Saket, Delhi.

This is our question to you Sir - For whom are you building this "Gorkha Bhawan"?

Recently we the Engineering students from Darjeeling, who are studying at Jadavpur University wanted to hold a freshers welcome for new students from Darjeeling who have taken admission in the Engineering department in Jadavpur university.

After a gap of many years, this year we are fortunate to have nearly 40-45 students from DARJEELING who have taken admission in Jadavpur University Engineering section.

We the senior students who study Engineering at Jadavpur University from Darjeeling wanted to welcome the new students from the hills so that they would feel welcome in a new place and know that they have elder brothers and sisters on whom they can count.

Sadly we were not just denied from booking the Gorkha Bhawan hall... but the staffs at Gorkha Bhawan literally tried to FLEECE us.

Believe it or not... but the Kolkata Gorkha Bhawan wanted Rs 20,000/- from US - DARJEELING STUDENTS for holding freshers welcome for NEW DARJEELING STUDENTS. That too just for the use of Gorkha Bhawan hall that too for ONLY 8 hours.

So this is what we want to ask you Sir, Mr. Bimal Gurung and GTA officials.. Who are these Gorkha Bhawan's meant for?

Is it for common Gorkhalis like us ? or is it meant just for the high and mighty within a GJM and GTA ?

Thankfully for us, we then approached a monastery, who provided us with a hall, chairs, tables and buffet facility for a mere Rs 1200/-

What has hurt us more is the fact that the Gorkha Bhawan officials tried to FLEECE us - Gorkhali students from Darjeeling

Will the GTA clarify as to why We - the STUDENTS were quoted the rate of Rs 20,000 for the use of Gorkha Bhawan hall for merely 8 hours?

Going by the rate quoted by Gorkha Bhawan Kolkata, Mr. Bimal Gurung we don't need a 17 crore Gorkha Bhawan to be built in Saket, Delhi.... if all it is going to do is fleece students like in order to support employment and commission for outsiders.

We hope you will look into the matter and inquire as to why the Gorkhali students were asked to pay Rs 20,000 for the use of a Hall in Gorkha Bhawan, Kolkata.

Sincerely,

Darjeeling Students
Jadavpur University
