Gorkha fighters selected for Asian Shito Ryu Karate Championship

Two fighters from the United Karate Do Association (recognized by the GTA) have been reportedly selected for the upcoming Asian Shito Ryu Karate Championship to be held in Singapore. Notably the association team members had won five different medals including two gold medals in the recently concluded 21st All India Shito Ryu Karate Championship, held at Coimbatore in Tamilnadu.

Talking to the reporters in Kurseong, the UKDA team leader and coach, Deven Gurung said on August 12, a twelve member team of the United Karate Do Association had left Darjeeling hills to participate in the 21st All India Shito Ryu Karate Championship, on August 15-17 at Coimbatore in Tamilnadu. He further informed that a total of 17 teams from 17 different places in India had participated in such championship tournament.

Black Belt, Kulehri Rai, (40), resident of Lavalingsey, Kalimpong won a gold medal in the ‘kata’ Tournament, while Kulehri Rai, Dipesh Chauhan (18), resident of Kurseong bagged the other gold in the ‘kumite’, below 59 kg category. Saideep Tamang (14) from Mirik won two medals, silver and a bronze in the 35 to 40 category ‘kata’ Tournament. Similarly, Sawan Rai, (13) resident of Kurseong won a bronze medal in the ‘kumite’ tournament.

Darjeeling Teens won 9 medals on South Asian Karate Championship

Teens from ‪‎Darjeeling‬ hills represented India in 5th South Asian Shotokan Karate-Do Championship on Jan.30.2014 held at Kathmandu Nepal and they were able to bag 9 Medals in the event.

The 5th South Asian Championship was  held at Kathmandu, Nepal between 21st of January 2014 to 24th of January 2014 at Kavard Hall, Dasarath Stadium, Tripureshwar, Kathmandu, Nepal. Participants from Five countries participated in the event.
Participants were from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan & Bhutan.

Medal Winners:-
Chogel Tamang – 1 Silver in Senior Group Kumite & Bronze in SeniorGroup Kata.
Shatabdi Tamang – 2 Bronze Medal in Kata
Anmol Lama – 1 Bronze in Kumite Along with Ashwin Rai, Pratham
Sharma, Roman Rai, Dipankar Rai,Sanjog Thapa & Ria Chettri who won medals in different categories respectively.

Shihan Pemba Tamang, President and Chief Instructor of Nihon Shotokan Karate-Do Federation, Japan (NSKF) conducted a day camp for all the participants. The event was organised by Nihon Shotokan Karate-Do Federation, Nepal.
