"Ye Nepali kon h (who is this Nepali)," an Instagram user by with the handle "yasharma.official" commented during the interaction between two of the country's sporting icons. A Twitter user shared a screenshot of the Instagram live chat with the comment and condemned the racist attitude towards people from the North-East, specifying the derogatory words that are frequently used for them in some other parts of India.

India is one of the most racist country.
The Indian football captain is called Nepali can only imagine the plight of North East people here. People not knowing Chhetri is still fine. But society has sort of normalised chinki, Nepali etc towards them.

People not knowing Chhetri is still fine. But society has sort of normalised chinki, Nepali etc towards them," he wrote, before adding "It's shameful."

Twitter users were enraged by the comment, with one user writing that the user who made the distasteful remark has been reported. "Nobody undermines Sunil Chhetri," he added.

The Instagram user's handle has been deactivated.

"Absolutely pathetic," one Twitter user commented.

Kids should be educated about diversity among people and culture. North East is just mentioned. It deserves much more attention than that. There is a lack of awareness. Sadly we know very little about the North East of our own country," wrote another user.

Sunil Chhetri has established himself as a legend in Indian football. He is India's highest-ever goal-scorer, with 72 strikes for the country.

Sunil Chhetri overtakes Wayne Rooney in active goal scorers list

7:14 AM

Sunil Chhetri surpassed Wayne Rooney as the current leading goal scorers in the world after his goal against Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday. He now has 54 International goals next to his name while Rooney sits at 53.

India captain Sunil Chhetri became the fourth highest active International player on Sunday after his goal against Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday. He surpassed England football great Wayne Rooney with a goal to sit on the fourth position after Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Clint Dempsey.

Chhetri’s goal against Kyrgyzstan in Bangalore not only helped India win the crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifier in Bangalore but also increased his greatness quotient for the cricket-crazy country.

The Captain scored the only goal in the qualifier in the 69th minute which ensured India sat at the top of the Group. He made a brilliant run, dribbled past the defence, returned it to a waiting Jeje who fed a decent ball for his skipper. Chhetri, who was waiting in the area,  produced a spectacular goal to give India the lead.

The goal was his 54th strike for India, while Rooney sits at 53. Only football legends Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, Argentina’s Lionel Messi and American Clint Dempsey stand ahead of the 32-year-old Chhetri.

While Ronaldo is the current leading goalscorer with 73 goals, the Real Madrid star is followed by rival Messi with 58 goals. With two more goals, Chhetri will stand par with Demsey to become the the highest active scorer only after the two legends Ronaldo and Messi.

Under coach Stephen Constantine, India have also improved their FIFA rankings to stand in the top 100 for the first time in 21 years.

Sunil Chhetri, The absolute Legend

10:31 AM

Sunil Chhetri, The absolute Legend.
Oh my God look at those stats. Look at his much superior goal scoring ratio per match.
We are so lucky that Indian football got a player like you. For us you are greatest of all time.

If someone says Messi , Ronaldo, Rooney  played against much stronger opponents to score those goals than our response is , all of them are from strong team themselves and had equally good playmates to assist them. If you have player like Angel de Maria to assist Messi , you shouldn't be complaining and comparing about the opposition. Above it just look at Sunil's Goal scoring Ratio, far better than among top 5. In fact he has highest goal scoring Ratio among top 100 footballing nation.
Admit it all of them are gem of football and Legends.

Share if you are a proud Indian.

Sunil Chhetri joined as the mentor and brand ambassador of DreamChasers

10:55 PM

MUMBAI: Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has joined as the mentor and brand ambassador of a nation-wide talent hunt programme to pick 15 youngsters in the 8-14 age group for a comprehensive five-year residential schooling in Kolhapur, western Maharashtra.

Under the programme titled 'DreamChasers' and started by three retired army personnel, youngsters would be provided top-class coaching and technical expertise by Sporting Clube de Portugal, for whose reserve side Chhetri had played for a while in 2012-13.

The talent hunt will be held in 15 venues and 10 cities, after kicking off here in April, to cover Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Kolhapur (all in Maharashtra), Baroda, Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Kerala, Delhi, Kolkatta and Guwahati, it was announced at a media conference here on Wednesday.

The selected lot would be nurtured and would undergo professional training until the age of 18 at the residential training centre of Proforce -- housed at the Dr Cyrus Poonawala International School in Kolhapur.

They would be entitled "to a 14-days sponsored training camp at SCP (Sporting Clube de Portugal). They will also be inducted into the special training programme, which is a commitment for five years," it was announced.

Besides football training, their education as well as lodging and boarding will also be looked after. The programme will include 10 months of football training in Kolhapur and one month of free training every year at SCP.

Chhetri, present at the announcement, said that he will be actively involved in the initiative.

"I am going to be part of all major decisions taken. They will be provided the best possible training. Everything will be provided for. The most important thing is coaching," said the 31-year-old national captain.

"When I went to Sporting Lisbon I was 26 and had a four year deal, I was there for seven months and I just played six games. I was improving and enjoying my time over there with the training and the kids I was playing with," said Chhetri.

"It was a great team but the guys who I played with were 17, 18 and 19 years of age and I was 26. I wish I was 16-17 then and I would have stayed for four years. Not saying that I am not enjoying now," he added.

A coach from SCP will be sent to stay with the trainees in Kolhapur with an Indian as his assistant.

"We are considered as one of the best in recruitment. Football in India has a lot of potential," said commercial head of SCP, Bruno Mascarenhas.

Sunil Chhetri's hat-trick makes him top goal scorer in ISL

10:32 PM

• With six strikes from four games, Chhetri has shot his way to joint-top spot in the goalscorers' list.

• His efforts helped Mumbai rise from the bottom of the ISL standings to a top-4 spot with three wins on the trot.

• A tactical switch in his position has led to Chhetri's goal-scoring spree.

MUMBAI: The rate at which he's finding the back of the net in the second edition of the Indian Super League (ISL), Mumbai City FC striker Sunil Chhetri appears to be making up for lost time having had to watch the inaugural season as a mere spectator. With six strikes from four games, including a hat-trick in Mumbai's last fixture against NorthEast United, making him the first Indian to achieve the feat in the ISL, Chhetri has shot his way to joint-top spot in the goalscorers' list.

His efforts helped Mumbai rise from the bottom of the ISL standings to a top-4 spot with three wins on the trot. And that is what matters more to the Indian national team captain visa-vis his personal feat.

"Without wanting to sound cliched, it doesn't matter about the goals. I'm so happy that we've got three wins," Chhetri told TOI during a visit to a local Puma store on Friday.

"If I had scored a hat-trick and we'd lost 5-3, we'd have been in deep trouble. Things weren't great after the first three games, so it was very important for us to get wins. I'm happy that I got the goals but I'm more happy that we won those matches."

So the obvious question is what has sparked this emphatic turnaround?

"Just the fact that we understood that we were underperforming," replied Chhetri. "Say if you are not a very fancy team, don't have the firepower, you're giving everything and still losing, then fine. But if you do have the signings, the players, and still under-performing, then that's a worry. We weren't doing justice to our talent. Thankfully we have put that right," he added.

It's no coincidence that, in the 31-year-old's case, a tactical switch in his position from playing in a wide role in his first outing against Chennaiyin FC to occupying the hole between midfield and attack has led to Chhetri's goal-scoring spree.

"All my life really, I have played either as a No. 9 or 10. It's just for Bengaluru (his I-League club) that I have played as a winger. But here, because the (DY Patil) ground is big and I was really wide, I didn't get the ball at all against Chennai and I got frustrated. I was chasing the ball like a headless chicken. Then both Nico (Anelka) and Oscar (assistant coach) came to me and said 'where do you want to play?' I said, 'I'm fine with playing anywhere but I wasn't getting enough balls'. They put me in the number 10 position and thankfully it has worked," said Chhetri.

Perhaps an ominous sign for Mumbai's opponents is the fact that marquee player-manager Nicolas Anelka has barely featured in their six games so far due to a groin issue. Chhetri certainly sounded encouraged by that fact. "We have scored 10 goals and Anelka hasn't even started yet," he said, adding: "I just can't wait to have him in the 11 soon. He's in the last part of his rehab, so hopefully you'll see him soon."

Chhetri's feat, though, came in a losing cause, as India suffered their second successive defeat in the preliminary joint qualification second round.

"Number of goals never matter for me. I never keep track of feats. I just play for my nation," Chhetri said after the match ended in a 1-2 defeat for the visitors.

Former captain Bhaichung Bhutia stays at the second spot with 42 goals in 107 matches while IM Vijayan has 40 goals from 79 games. This meanwhile, was Chhetri's 87th match.

After Guam took a two-goal lead by scoring in each half, Chhetri reduced the margin for the visitors in added time, heading in a cross from the right.

For the record, it was Chhetri who scored India's all the goals in the team's four joint preliminary round 2018 World Cup qualifying games so far.

Sunil Chhetri lifted the Federation Cup for Bengaluru FC

2:09 PM
MARGAO: Sunil Chhetri lifted the Federation Cup for the first time in his long career on Sunday. The India captain not only scored the first goal for his team but also shared the top-scorer's honours with Dempo's Tolgay Ozbey.

And in doing so, Chhetri also became the first Indian player to finish as (joint) top scorer in both I-League as well as the following Federation Cup.

"I'm part of a very good team. We performed as a team. Every goal was a collective effort and we celebrated it as a team effort. We play as a team and we score as a team. That's our key to success," Chhetri said after the match.

Coach Ashley Westwood said, "We always wanted to show (to our critics) that winning the I-League last season was not a fluke. By winning the Federation Cup, we have proved that we are a good side and we are going in the right direction. The team's efforts in the last couple of weeks, not just today, have been magnificent. - timesofindia

Margao: Bengaluru FC lifted their maiden Federation Cup football tournament title when they edged past 10-man Dempo FC 2-1 in the summit clash here on Sunday.

Sunil Chhetri (10th minute) and substitute Robin Singh (65th) scored for the winners while Tolgay Ozbey (45+4) pulled one back for the home team at Nehru Stadium at Fatorda here.

This was the second major title for Bengaluru FC in their two years of existence. They have won the I-League last season.

For Dempo FC, who won the title in 2004, they finished runners-up for the fifth time.

Bengaluru FC defender Curtis Osano was declared the Hero of the Match and was awarded Rs 10,000. Dempo's Romeo Fernandes, who scored four goals, was named Hero of the Tournament and earned Rs one lakh.

Both the teams came into this match with unbeaten records and there was not much to separate between the two teams till the hour mark.

But the complexion of the game changed after Bengaluru FC took the lead, which turned out to be the match-winner, in the 65th minute and then Dempo were reduced to 10 men three minutes later as defender Rowilson Rodrigues was shown a direct red card by referee Pratap Singh for a dangerous foul on Thoi Singh.

The match started at a slow pace but Bengaluru FC took the early lead as they earned a penalty after Dempo defender Haroon Fakhruddin pushed Eugenseson Lyngdoh down inside the box while going for an aerial ball from a flag kick taken on the left.

Chhetri did not make any mistake from the spot, beating keeper Laxmikant Kattimani to his right to score his sixth goal of the tournament.

Dempo FC were unlucky not to earn a penalty midway in the first half as referee Pratap apparently did not see defender John Johnson elbowing Romeo Fernandes inside the Bengaluru box.

Dempo striker Tolgay Ozbey, who was equal with Chhetri on five goals coming into this match, got a chance but his effort missed the target by a whisker.

Dempo's persistent attack finally paid off as they earned a penalty in the stoppage time of the first half. John Johnson blocked Haroon Fakhruddin inside the box as he was running for the ball and the referee awarded the penalty.

Tolgay Ozbey took the penalty and blasted the ball to the right of keeper Lalthuammawia Ralte to score his sixth goal and remain on equal terms with Chhetri as both the team went 1-1 at half time.

Bengaluru started better in the second session and enjoyed better ball possession and took the lead in the 65th minute when a move on the right saw Thoi Singh send a measured cross for substitute Robin Singh to nod home a powerful header past a diving Laxmikant Kattimani.

Dempo suffered a double blow three minutes later when defender Rowilson Rodrigues was shown a direct red card by the referee for a dangerous foul on Thoi Singh.

The visitors, who enjoyed the numerical advantage, had a couple of close chances to increase the lead but first a Chhetri header was saved by the keeper by diving to his left and then Francis Fernandes made a goal-line save.

Dempo nearly equalised from a counter attack but substitute Holicharan Nazaray, who was unmarked inside the box, failed to score off a cross from the left by Haroon Fakhurddin.

Dempo repeatedly found themselves under pressure in the last 10 minutes with Francis Fernandes once again making a goal-line save off Sean Rooney's header after the keeper was beaten. - sports.ndtv

Sunil Chhetri - India's first target should be top-10 in Asia not FIFA World Cup

4:51 PM
Ranked 154th in the world, Indian football needs to improve by leaps and bounds. National captain Sunil Chhetri says that the target should be breaking into the top-10 in Asia before the team looks to make a mark globally.

Conceding that India has been left far behind in world football, national team captain Sunil Chhetri said that the country should not think of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in the near future, and instead should aim to be in the top 10 in Asia.

With the FIFA World Cup just a few days away, Chhetri was asked when would India qualify for that showpiece football event and he was at pains to explain that the country was nowhere near that level.

"It's unfair to compare India with the top football countries in the world. We are far behind in world football," Chhetri said at the launch of an e-magazine at the German Embassy. "Our focus should not be in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup but to be among the top 10 rankings in Asia in the near future. We have to take small steps and first think of rising up to be among the second rung Asian countries."

Further, Chhetri said India's aim should be to rise up to the level of the likes of Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

"We are a dominant country in South Asia. But our standard of football should move ahead of winning SAFF Championships. Our first aim should be to be able to compete with Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

"Then in the next level, we can think of competing the top Asian countries likes Japan, South Korea, Iran, Australia who are representing Asia in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this time," said Chhetri, who will be commentating during the World Cup.

Sunil Chhetri is on the verge of surpassing Bhaichung Bhutia’s record

5:35 PM
India and Bengaluru FC captain Sunil Chhetri is on the verge of surpassing Bhaichung Bhutia’s record of scoring most goals by an Indian in a single edition of the National Football League (NFL) or I-League. The Indian football icon scored 14 goals for JCT in the inaugural NFL season in 1996-97 and that tally is yet to be bettered.

Sunil’s current tally this season is 13 and he has four matches to score two more and break the 17-year long record. The Arjuna Awardee has already equalled the record of most goals scored by an Indian in a single I-League season (since 2007-08).
Previously Mohammed Rafi (Mahindra United – 2009-10) and Jeje Lalpekhlua (Indian Arrows – 2010-11) have scored 13 each in one campaign.
Sunil is also aiming to become only the third Indian to finish as the highest scorer in a single NFL or I-League season and the first to do so in the I-League era. The first two editions of the NFL – Bhaichung Bhutia (1996-97) and Raman Vijayan (1997-98) – saw Indians finishing as top scorers but for the last 15 seasons that accolade has gone to a foreigner.
Here is a complete list showing the Indian highest scorer in each campaign. Bhaichung has been the top scorer from India on five occasions while Sunil and Raman Vijayan have achieved it twice each with the former set to do it for a third time this season.

** Season still active
13 more
The reigning AIFF player of the year still needs 13 more goals to become the highest Indian scorer in the combined history of the NFL and I-League. Unsurprisingly that record also belongs to Bhaichung, who has scored 88 times, playing in 12 editions for four different clubs – JCT, East Bengal (three spells), Mohun Bagan (two spells), and United Sikkim (as player, coach and co-owner).
Sunil is also in his 12th top-flight campaign and has featured for seven different clubs – Mohun Bagan (twice), JCT, East Bengal, Dempo, United SC, Churchill Brothers and Bengaluru FC and has 76 goals to his name. In two of those seasons he has played on loan from foreign clubs in only the latter parts of the campaign – (Kansas City Wizards to United SC in 2010-11) & (Sporting Lisbon ‘B’ to Churchill Brothers in 2012-13).
