Legendary Singer Aruna Lama Conferred Nepal Ratna Award April 14, 2019: Legendary

Nepali singer Smt. Aruna Lama (Pradhan), born in Darjeeling, was conferred the prestigious Nepal Ratna, Mahaujjwal Rashtradeep Award (Suprabal Janasewa Shree Tritiya) for her contribution to promoting Nepali music around the world. The President of Nepal, Bidya Devi Bhandari conferred the award at a special ceremony held at the Office of the President, Maharajgunj.

Born on the 9th of September, 1945 at Ghoom Pahar, Darjeeling, Aruna Lama is popularly known as the “Nightingale of the Hills”. She has rendered hundreds of Nepali songs and left an indelible mark as one of the finest Nepali singers.

The illustrious title by the Nepal government is conferred on  Nepali citizens and foreigners who make outstanding contributions to the welfare of Nepal and Nepali language and art.

Chandra Kumar Gurung conferred Jeevan Raksha Padak 2018

The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak 2018 on 48 persons including Shri Chandra Kumar Gurung of Sikkim. Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person. The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak. Persons of all walks of life are eligible for these awards. The award can also be conferred posthumously.
Chandra Kumar Gurung conferred Jeevan Raksha Padak 2018

Chandra Kumar Gurung of Kaluk village in West Sikkim saved a life of a road accident victim near Singtam on November 9, 2017.

He was awarded the certificate of Commendation by the Governor of Sikkim in January 26, 2018.

The decoration of the award (medal, certificate signed by the Union Home Minister and lump sum monetary allowance) is presented to the awardee in due course by the respective Union Ministries/­Organizations/State Government to which the awardee belongs.

The 48 awards include Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 08, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 15 and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 25 persons. 08 awards are posthumous

Draupadi Ghimire conferred Padma Shri 2019

Gorkhas daughter from Silkim Miss Draupadi Ghmire has been conferred the prestigious National award Padma Shri for 2019 for ker tireless service in the field of social work.

Draupadi Ghimire, is a social worker and the founder of Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samity. She has been nominated for her distinguished sevice in providing comprehensive service with the persons with disabilities. Her NGOs help people with artificial limbs and hands and also provides free cleft platate surgeries. Originally a nurse at the STNM, she took it upon herself to help those with physical disabilities. She hails from Gangtok and has also been awarded by state government and other agencies for her selfless contribution.
Draupadi Ghimire conferred Padma Shri 2019

After seeing her father struggle to get artificial limb, 63 year old Draupadi Ghimirey founded Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samity ( SVSS), NGO which provides artificial limbs to the needy ones.

" I am humbled by the announcement, It wouuld help he extend my service to more needy ones" she says,

Hailing her finally getting the much awaited national recognition, Writer Vikas Saraswat tweeted, “Elder sister like Ms Draupadi Ghimire is a Padma Shri today. Remaining unmarried, turning down offers for Govt posts, refusing MLA tickets from SDF, Draupadi Didi has devoted her entire life to the physically handicapped of Sikkim. Remarkably simple and austere life.”

Sunil Chhetri receives the prestigious Padma Shri 2019

Legendary Indian Gorkha footballer Sunil Chhetri receives the prestigious Padma Shri 2019 for his revolutionary unparallel service to Indian football. Chettri has scored 2nd highest number of goals in international matches after Cristiano Ronaldo. He recently surpassed Argentine footballer Lionel Messi to become the second highest goal scorer during Asian Cup 2019.

Sunil Chhetri receives the prestigious Padma Shri 2019

Popularly known as Captain Fantastic Chhetri has been named as an 'Asian Icon' by AFC on 3rd August 2018.Chettri has not looked behind since he began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002.

Chhetri has been named AIFF Player of the Year five times in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017. In club football, Chhetri has scored as many as 122 goals in 235 appearances, while playing for major clubs like East Bengal, Bengaluru FC and Mohun Bagan to name a few.

Every sports person worth his/her salt dreams of representing the National Team, very few get to become a part of that privileged group of select individuals who are called on to do the national duty. Rarer still are the chances even amongst those very few individuals who have been called on national duty to be asked to Lead the National Team .
Bharat Chettri Wins Dhyanchand Award

But the rarest of those honours, that every sporting individual dreams of all life long, is to lead the team in the Olympics.

Bharat Chettri - local Kalimpong lad has lived all the dreams any sports person can dream of.

He has the distinction of being the first goalie ever in the history of Indian hockey to lead Team India at the Olympics. He has participated in and won many international tournaments for India.

Yesterday, President of India Ram Nath Kovind presented Dhyan Chand Award 2018 to one of our National Icons Shri Bharat Kumar Chettri in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contribution for the promotion of Hockey.

The Dhyan Chand Award, officially known as Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games, is the lifetime achievement sporting honour of the Republic of India. The award is named after Dhyan Chand (1905–79), an Indian field hockey player who scored more than 1000 goals during a career which spanned over 20 years from 1926 to 1948.

It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Recipients are selected by a committee constituted by the Ministry and are honoured for their contributions to sport both during their active sporting career and after retirement.

Loknath Upadhaya Chapagain from Assam, who is settled in Siliguri has won the Tulshiram Sharma 'Kashyap' award in Sikkim for his book "Kina Royaou Ppama "

He was felicitatiedted yesterday at Sikkim Sahitya Parishad with a citation and 51k cash award.

This award has been instituted by Shri. Tulshiram Sharma 'Kashyap  Pratishthan of Sikkim for books published in Nepali in the last three years

TR Sharma Kashyap happens to be the first Sahitya award winner in Nepali from Sikkim.

We congratulate Loknath sir and wish him more success in the coming days.

Kirti Chakra to Havildar Giris Gurung Gorkha Rifles

President Ramnath Kovind today presented Kirti Chakra to Havildar Giris Gurung (Posthumous), 4th Battalion, First Gorkha Rifles.
Havildar Gurung displayed exemplary selfless courage under fire and an unmatched spirit in killing two militants in Kupwara, J&K till his martyrdom

During a search operation in Kupwara, though bleeding profusely, he realised the threat to his team and with utter disregard for his personal safety, moved to eliminate the militant.
Though grievously injured, he eliminated another militant before succumbing.
