Rueben Memorial School (RMS) 100 % Success in West Bengal School Board Examinations 2016

6:46 PM
Rueben Memorial School (RMS) which is located almost 25 kms away from Darjeeling town, in the remote and peripheral region in Chongtong tea estate has secured 100% results in the West Bengal School Board Examinations 2016. The school which is celebrating her Silver Jubilee this year, has maintained this trend since 2001, the year when her first batch of students wrote their class 10 board examinations. Only two students had appeared in the exams then.

This year fifty students had appeared for class 10 Madhyamik Examinations and all of them attained success. The highest score was 73 per cent. In the +2 level RMS has only Humanities/Arts department. This time twenty-one Arts students had appeared in the West Bengal Higher Secondary Board Examinations. Out of 21 candidates, 19 of them secured first class while 2 were graded second division. Amon Tshering Sherpa was successful in securing 86 per cent while the lowest secured percentage was 56 per cent.

Despite of many barriers and drawbacks of a life in tea garden, the socio-economic hardship and grassroot political disorders, these students have proved their worth and commitments towards their studies and future. They have gratified their families, school and society at large and made everyone feel good and proud. These motivating students have literally proved the phrase "where there is a will, there is a way" and have armored themselves with 'education' - which according to Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai, 'is the greatest weapon of the modern times that has the power to transform the world'.

On this occasion, the Ruebenian Family including our teaching and non-teaching staffs would take the opportunity to congratulate all the successful students of the school and region for their success and wish them good luck for their future endeavors.

Mamata Banerjee's meeting next to CBSE exam centre in Kurseong

9:38 AM
Writes Vivek Chhetri

Darjeeling, March 14: Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address a public meeting tomorrow at Monteviot Ground in Kurseong, less than 100m away from a school where students would be taking their Class X board exams.

Although the meeting near Godwin Modern School is being described as an "indoor" event, till late this afternoon, the space between the main dais and the sitting area for Trinamul supporters was not covered.

A pandal has been erected on the remaining space with a cloth covering on top, which is unlikely to block any noise.

According to the environment department rules, there is a blanket ban on outdoor use of loudspeakers starting from three days before the commencement of any board examination till its end.

Godwin Modern School is an exam centre where 26 CBSE students from different schools outside Kurseong would write their Class X English Communicative paper from 10.30am to 1.30pm tomorrow.

Apart from test, the school that has 110 students studying from Pre-nursery to Class XII holds regular classes from 8am till 2.30pm.

Trinamul leaders said the public meeting was scheduled to start after 1.30pm. "It is an indoor meeting and it will start after 1.30pm and end around 4.30pm tomorrow," said Rajen Mukhia, president, Trinamul (Hills). He added that they had sought permission for the meeting as an indoor event.

Bipul Kumar Biswas, the subdivisional officer of Kurseong, who issued the permit for the event as the assistant returning officer, refused to comment today.

The authorities of Godwin Modern School refused to be drawn into any controversy.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has objected to the meeting saying the examinees in the school building will be sitting closer to Mamata than her supporters who would come to listen to her.

"Compare the distance between the dais and the school and between the dais and the last man standing inside their so-called pandal. We are surprised. How was permission granted to organise the meeting when the board exams are being held? We have lodged a complaint with the state's chief electoral officer (complaint number 126030240002619)," said Yogendra Rai, president, Morcha town committee (Kurseong) who is also an elected GTA Sabha member.

The complaint naming Mukhia was lodged today.

"Imagine the amount of noise that would be generated even before 1.30pm. There are a number of residential buildings in the area and apart from CBSE, ICSE and ISC examinations are also on. Other schools near the venue are Dawn Boarding and Little Flower schools. But the closest is Godwin Modern School," Rai said. "We have requested the assistant returning officer to cancel the permit. If this is the situation under which TMC is being allowed to hold a public meeting then all other political parties should be given permission for the same."

Asked about the complaint, Anurag Srivastava, the district returning officer and Darjeeling district magistrate, said: "I have learnt from the SDO, Kurseong, who had issued the permission that the meeting is in a covered pandal, which is treated as an indoor place. Restriction by the pollution control board on mike use is not applicable to indoor places. The condition of granting permission is that sound should not emanate from the pandal and students should not be disturbed."

11:23 AM
Siliguri, March 11: The North Bengal University (NBU) today postponed Part I, II and III examinations of BA, BSc and BCom honours and general streams from April 4 to May 25 as the previous dates clashed with the Assembly elections.

"After these exams are over, BA, BSc and BCom papers of Part I and Part II general courses will begin from June 13 and end on July 19," he said here.

Das said the decision had been taken after the district administrations of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri had requisitioned colleges under the varsity for election purposes.

"We have received letters from the authorities of Siliguri College and Parimal Mitra College in Malbazar, saying the respective district administrations had requisitioned the colleges for the Assembly elections on different days in March, April and May, that is till the completion of the election process. We have got to know that colleges in other districts, too, may be requisitioned for the purpose. Under these circumstances, we had to postpone the undergraduate examinations of the colleges affiliated to the NBU from April 4 to May 25," Das said.

Vidhyarthi Morcha Demands Heaters and Stoves in Madhyamik Centers

The Gorkha Janmukti Vidhyarthi Morcha has reminded the District Administration and the Bengal government that it is still very cold in Darjeeling, and since Bengal government pushed forward the date of Madhyamik examinations without considering the discomfort that hill students have to face, they should provide for room heaters and stoves (angeti) in those schools that are in the higher altitude.

The WBSSC had assured hill students that proper warming equipments aill be provided to all the schools that require heating, however nothing has been done till date and the examinations begin from February 1st.

The decision has been taken to increase the importance of medical science and prompt students to focus more on biology. Even negative marking has been decreased to 1/4th from 1/3rd with multiple choice questions in all the papers.

Previously, 100 marks were allotted for the Biology examination, but after the change 150 marks will be allotted for biology examination.
There were also changes in the marks for physics, chemistry too. Previously, 75 marks were allotted each for physics and chemistry, but now both the papers have been combined and 50 marks was allotted for each paper. There havebeen changes in the syllabus too and it has been so designed so that it keeps parity with CBSE, ISC and HS Board.

Mr Bhaskar Gupta , chairman of Joint Entrance Board said that the new syllabus has been uploaded on the website and as the syllabus for Higher Secondary has been changed we have decided to change the syllabus, so that students do not face any difficulty during their examinations.

Senior officials of WBJEE said that the change in the syllabus has been made so that students from no particular school/Board will get preferential treatment. More descriptive topics have been either omitted or given less importance than the analytical ones. Stress has been laid more on the depth of the syllabi rather than the extent of coverage.

There will be changes in marking system whereby more questions will be given in Category III rather than Category II. Previously, 10 questions were allotted in Category II, but now five questions will be given in Category II and 10 questions will be given in Category III. In 2015, Biology examination of WBJEE will be held on 18 April, while mathematics, physics, chemistry will be held on 19 April.

It was a shocker for candidates in Kurseong who were supposed to appear in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams for various posts under various categories.
Hill SSC Candidates Get Admit Card 5 Days After Exams kurseong
The examinees received their admit cards from the post office today, a full five days after the examination they were supposed to write was ‘successfully’ completed.

While these candidates have received the admit cards that are of no use now, there are other candidates for the SSC’s Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination-2014 who are yet to see what their admit cards look like.

Jeenu Khati, a resident of a tea estate near Kurseong, said several of her friends had also applied for the examination.

“This thing is really unfortunate,” she said, adding that she had applied for the post of a Lower Division Clerk under the SSC.

Another aspiring candidate, Radhika Prasad, who said she was utterly surprised to get the admit card today, has written a complaint letter to the Postmaster of the Kurseong Post Office.

“I got the admit card today, but to my horror, the exam was already over on 2 November,” she said. When asked, Kurseong Postmaster Manoj Kumar Das said they received the admit cards only today and dispatched them immediately.

“Our post-persons had notified us that they have received admit cards for the 2 and 9 November examinations, but since it is the duty of their office to dispatch the articles, they distributed both the letters immediately,” he said. Officials of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) protested and condemned the incident. GTA Education Department chief, Roshan Giri, said they will protest such negligence with the authorities concerned.

The syllabus reforms committee of the state government has given these proposals to the state secondary board, which accepted the suggestions today.

The changes will be introduced from the 2015-16 academic session.

“Students who will appear in the Madhyamik examinations in 2017 will be first batch to be tested on the new exam system,” said board administrator Kalyanmoy Ganguly.

According to the board’s decision, there will be 40 per cent multiple choice and one-mark questions in every subject in Madhyamik.

In another proposal, the syllabus committee has suggested allotting 10 percent marks on internal assessments of students in all the subjects in which has also been accepted by the board today.

Students’ attendance will be considered as one of the criterions in the internal assessment.

The 10 mark internal assessment will replace the existing oral tests which carries the same number of marks.
