Sikkim Launches Disaster Information App

8:47 AM

The Sikkim disaster management department today launched a free mobile app that would provide details of natural calamities like landslides and earthquakes, along with road condition and weather warning.

The app, developed by a Calcutta-based company, Sysepedia, also has information about recent land and crop damage, casualties and exgratia norms.

The Sikkim Disaster Management App was launched by the state relief commissioner, C.T. Wangdi, at the land revenue and disaster management department office.

"The application could be useful for smart phone users as a tool to get information on all disaster management activities in Sikkim," said Wangdi.

The app can be downloaded through Play Store in smart phones.

"One has to type Sikkim Disaster Management and install the app. The information would be updated every day. It is a free app," said a senior official.

The district collectors of all four districts of the state would be the "admin" and they would log in and update information.

South district collector Raj Yadav said: "We felt it was necessary to launch the application because the present system of disseminating information is time taking. Collectors would gather information from the BDOs and panchayats and report to the head office. Now, the process would be fast and it would be easily accessible."

The relief commissioner said the panchayats would be asked to download the application. "We will ask the block development officers to raise awareness of the application."

Facebook buys WhatsApp for $19 billion

11:24 PM
In a play to dominate messaging on phones and the Web, Facebook has acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion.

That's a stunning sum for the five-year old company. But WhatsApp has been able to hold its weight against messaging heavyweights like Twitter (TWTR), Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) and Microsoft's (MSFT, Fortune 500) Skype. WhatsApp has upwards of 450 million users, and it is adding an additional million users every day.

Facebook buys WhatsApp for $19 billion
Facebook buys WhatsApp for $19 billion

Referring to WhatsApp's soaring growth, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a conference call, "No one in the history of the world has done anything like that."
WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app for smartphones, according to OnDevice Research.

Buying WhatsApp will only bolster Facebook's already strong position in the crowded messaging world. Messenger, Facebook's a standalone messaging app for mobile devices, is second only to WhatsApp in its share of the smartphone market.
Related: 5 key moments that changed Facebook

Similar to traditional text messaging, WhatsApp allows people to connect via their cellphone numbers. But instead of racking up texting fees, WhatsApp sends the actual messages over mobile broadband. That makes WhatsApp particularly cost effective for communicating with people overseas.

That kind of mobile messaging services have become wildly popular, with twice as many messages sent over the mobile Internet than via traditional texts, according to Deloitte. But most of the messaging industry's revenue is still driven by text messaging.

On the conference call, Facebook said it is not looking to drive revenue from WhatsApp in the near term, instead focusing on growth. Zuckerberg said he doesn't anticipate trying to aggressively grow WhatsApp's revenue until the service reaches "billions" of users.
WhatsApp currently charges a dollar a year after giving customers their first year of use for free. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum said on the conference call that WhatsApp's business model is already successful.

That indicates Facebook bought WhatsApp to add value to its existing messaging services, as well as for the long-term potential of the company.
Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 for similar reasons: As young social network users gravitated towards photo-sharing, Facebook wanted to scoop up what could have eventually become a big rival.

Like Instagram, WhatsApp will function as an autonomous unit within Facebook, with all the existing employees coming in as part of the deal.

Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) said it will pay WhatsApp $4 billion in cash and $12 billion in stock. WhatsApp's founders and staff will be eligible for for another $3 billion in stock grants to be paid out if they remain employed by Facebook for four years. Koum will also join Facebook's board of directors.

Samsung pays 30 trucks 5-cent coins, $1 billion dollars, to Apple

3:08 PM
This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.

Samsung pays Apple $1 Billion sending 30 trucks full of 5 cent coins
The funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best.

This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins.

Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it.

You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law.

A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week.

Let’s see how Apple will respond to this.

The company will initially target states which have high Urdu speaking population such as Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh among a few others.

Present at the event, Sibal said that it will benefit the Urdu speaking population in the country, which is one of the largest in the world. There are several initiatives running from the ministry of communications and IT to extend the usage of the language for the Internet, Sibal added.

It is often argued that one of the primary reasons for the high digital divide in the country is due to unavailability of content in local languages. Just about 10% of India's 1.2 billion population uses the Internet.

This comes at the backdrop of reports that the poll-bound government is planning to distribute 25 million mobile phones and 9 million tablets with the aim of bridging the digital divide in the country.

The event also marks the first launch by the company after Microsoft announced it was acquiring Nokia in a $7.2 billion deal last week.

Hacker turns Google Glass into a drone controller

8:29 PM
A security researcher has reportedly used a JavaScript code in order to turn Google's wearable computing eyegear Google Glass into a drone controller.

Google Glass
Google Glass
Blaine Bublitz experimented with a JavaScript program called node.js. to create a program to tweak for different controllers andvehicles.

Bublitz was successful in his experiment and is now able to control a drone softly floating in the air before him with just a slight tilt of the head, Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Although, he was able to control the AR drone via Google Glass, there were a few glitches as Bublitz said that he couldn't see where the bot was while he was control ling it adding that something that could be of about eye height would have been better.

He said that he would like to add the ability to rotate the drone left and right based on Google Glass' azimuth value but that will take time to realize.

Users who want to experiment with the program can also download it from Bublitz's GitHub profile, the report added.

Facebook - 62 million mobile phone Indian users

10:07 PM
Exponential growth of affordable handsets in India has helped social networking giant Facebook clock 62 million mobile phone users by June 2013 in the world's second most populous country.

The California-based firm reported a healthy growth of 5 per cent in its monthly active users (MAUs) in India to 82 million as of June 30, 2013 from 78 million in June 30, 2012.

"As of June 30, 2013, 62 million people in India accessed Facebook through their mobile phones. It has 82 million MAUs in India and the firm believes that the next billion users are going to come through mobile," Facebook India Country Growth Manager Kevin D'Souza said.

Globally, mobile MAUs rose by 51 per cent to 819 million as of June 30, 2013 from 543 million as of June 30, 2012, the company said while presenting its quarterly results.

"In all regions, an increasing number of our MAUs are accessing Facebook through mobile devices, with users in India, Brazil and Indonesia representing key sources of mobile growth over the second quarter of 2013 as compared to the first quarter of 2013," Facebook had said.

Mobile MAU is a user who accessed Facebook via a mobile app or via mobile-optimised versions of the website, whether on a mobile phone or tablet during the period of measurement.

"Feature phones consists of a large chunk of mobile phone users in India and with low price points these devices are becoming the first Internet connected device many people will own," D'Souza said.

Research firm IDC pegged the mobile phone market in India at about 218 million units last year, growing by 16 per cent year-on-year. Of this, 16.3 million units were smartphones.

According to CyberMedia Research (CMR), Indian mobile phone market is seeing a spurt in sales, growing 20.8 per cent to 221.6 million handsets in 2012. Feature phones registered a sales growth of 19.9 per cent to 206.4 million in 2012 from 172.2 million in year-ago period.

Irrespective of the platform Facebook's focus is towards connecting people whether it?s through desktop, laptops, feature phones or smartphones, he added.

"Facebook has evolved from a 'mobile first' to 'mobile best' company as it becomes the primary reason for many to access the Internet. Our priority is to ensure that people have access to Facebook regardless of platform or device," he said.

Mobile is the perfect platform for Facebook as both were built for connecting, a constant companion that can capture and share moments anywhere, anytime, D'Souza said.

Facebook invested in building 'Facebook for Every Phone' app, which delivers Smartphone-like Facebook experience on feature phones. Over 100 million people access the website every month through the app for feature phones, aiding the firm in expanding in developing markets like India.

Android Jelly Bean adoption continues to grow

10:11 PM
Android Jelly Bean adoption continues to grow after recently surpassing Gingerbread for the first time.

According to stats published Friday, Jelly Bean (versions 4.1.x and 4.2.x) was running on 40.5 percent of Android devices as of Aug. 1. Gingerbread landed at 33.1 percent, followed by Ice Cream Sandwich at 22.5 percent.
Jelly Bean first topped Gingerbread in June, according to last month's stats. At that time, approximately 37.9 percent of Android users were on Jelly Bean, while 34.1 percent were on Gingerbread, and 23.3 percent were still running Ice Cream Sandwich.
At this point, very few Android devices are still running the earliest versions of the mobile OS. Around 2.5 percent are on Froyo, while 1.2 percent have Éclair, and just 0.1 percent are running Donut (as well as the tablet-centric Honeycomb).
Google just yesterday unveiled the much-anticipated Moto X phone, which will run Android 4.2.2 at launch. Spokespeople did not have any timetables on a possible bump to Android 4.3, which launched last month on the new Nexus 7. For more, see PCMag's Hands On With Motorola's Moto X.
Android Jelly Bean adoption continues to grow

The next major update to Android, codenamed Key Lime Pie, is expected in October, though Google has made no announcements. This will likely contribute more to the phenomenon known as Android fragmentation, though a recent report argued that fragmentation actually has its benefits.
Meanwhile, the Android platform overall is still going strong, with a 65 percent lead over all other mobile operating systems, according to new stats from Strategy Analytics. The report tipped a growing global smartphone market, up 47 percent year over year for a total 230 million units shipped in the second quarter. Android was the greatest benefactor of the uptick, having captured a record 80 percent share of the global smartphone OS market.

Apple developer website was attacked

5:06 PM
Apple has sent out emails to developers informing them that its developer website was attacked by an outsider last week, AllThingsD reports. The company has stated in the mail that it was due to an intruder’s intervention that it had to shut its developer’s website. On the safety front, Apple has claimed that since the database and information regarding developer’s sensitive personal details had been saved in an encrypted format, these could not be misused by the intruder. Though, it has also mentioned that the attacker might have been able to access developers name, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses.

Apple developer website was attacked

Apple’s developer site had been shut since Thursday and it had initially said it was down for maintenance, only now revealing the real cause. According to the note sent to developers, the website will remain shut for security reasons, and will be unavailable until the company hardens the security and provides a better safety system. The note also includes that they are “completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database.”

Apple has not mentioned any detail on when exactly will it reopen for the developers, and has stated that “we expect to have the developer website up again soon.”

The website is updated now, and is reopened for users.

The Apple developer site can be used by developers to get access to iOS 7, OS X Mavericks and other software development kits. It also guides developers in putting their apps to beta testers, and comes with developer-only forums.

Here is the note sent out to the developers:

Apple Developer Website Update

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

Antitheft measures on Apple and Samsung

10:37 AM
SAN FRANCISCO -- There's still more work to be done before the public learns whether experts were able to circumvent the latest antitheft measures from Apple and Samsung on their smartphones.

antitheft measures from Apple and Samsung

San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón told reporters here that results from Thursday's security tests on Apple's iOS 7 and the LoJack program for Samsung's Galaxy S4 are still being compiled, and urged patience for the results.

Those tests, which were done by the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center and publicized earlier this week, aim to stress-test the latest security from both phone makers to see whether they deter thieves who get their hands on the hardware. In Apple's case, the security feature being tested is not even publicly available yet, and still in development inside iOS 7, which is scheduled to launch this fall.

Nonetheless, Gascón said demonstrations from both companies were impressive.
"There are clear improvements to the technology that we saw, both for the new Galaxy phones as well as iOS 7 operating system," Gascón said, adding that there's still more work that needs to be done by both companies.

"We want to make sure that the manufacturers provide what we call a persistent universal system that has a kill switch that is free to the consumer, and we believe that the possibility to develop such technology is there, and I think we're moving in the right direction," he said.
As it stands now, the solution Samsung is offering currently requires a $30-a-year paid subscription from consumers. That represents a small cost of overall cell phone ownership with a two-year plan from a carrier, but still isn't free. Apple's program, which is free (though includes fewer features), requires the proper Apple ID credentials to do things like turn off Apple's device-tracking features, or reactivate a device that a user's deactivated.

As for progress with other phone makers, Gascón said his and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office hadn't seen "significant movement" from Microsoft or Google on similar antitheft efforts in their phones.

"They clearly do not have a plan yet to deal with the problem," he said.

Best low cost tablet in the market

11:52 PM
If the final product would be anything like the proposed specification, then it would be the best low cost tablet in the market. As per the government notification, the tablet must have a 7 inch LCD display with "at least” 800x480 pixels resolution. Also, the display should have minimum five point touch capacity. Most of the tablets under Rs 5,000 have such resolution.
Aakash tablet computers
Aakash tablet computers

Also, as per the government, the tablet should have the latest Android operating system. For instance, if it is launched now it should have Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean version. But it does not end there as the government has also specified that the tablet should come with dual bootable (through external SD card) Ubuntu operating system.

Currently, iBall 6318i tablet has similar specification as mentioned in the notification, like 1 GB RAM, Android Jelly Bean operating system, 7 inch screen, 4 GB internal memory, 2 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front camera etc and it is selling for around Rs 5,000 in the market.

To make it run smoother, the Aakash IV tablet would be fitted with a minimum of 1 GB DDR3 RAM - which is significant as most of the under Rs 5,000 tablet these days comes 512 MB RAM. It would also have minimum of 4 GB internal memory and a 32 GB micro SD card slot.
"Hardware accelerator should be capable of supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 playing true HD720p with at least 30fps," the notification released by the government further added.
As per the proposal, the Aakash IV should come with WiFi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 or higher version, 3.5 mm jack, USB port and it should support all popular 2G/3G/4G phone/data connectivity dongles in India, USB to Ethernet adaptors, USB printers, mouse, and keyboard. "SD Card interface should support NFC based SD card," the notification further added.

The government though has not specified the exact capacity of the battery to be used in the tablet but it has asked the would-be vendors to fit a batter in the Aakash IV that would give minimum 3 hours for online 720p video playback with maximum brightness, minimum 5 hours on web browsing, 6 hours on e-reader and 30 days of standby time. The tablet also need to have a front camera of VGA (0.3 megapixel) resolution of higher.

Though the notification, does not speak much about the processor's capability to be used in Aakash IV, it has asked the would be vendor to make the tablet in such a way that it would give a minimum of 3537 Antutu benchmark score.

The tablet should have a weight of less than 500 grams and must measure less than 0.75x5x0.75 inch (width, height, thickness).
We hope the Aakash IV would sell around Rs 4,000 considering the price of its previous version in the open market while the subsidised price would be around Rs 2,000.

BlackBerry Q5 launched in India for Rs 24,990

11:22 PM
As expected, BlackBerry today launched the Q5 in India, which is the most affordable smartphone running its BB10 operating system. Priced at Rs 24,990 , the Q5 not only brings the new swipe-based UI, but also a physical QWERTY keypad, which is a rarity these days. BlackBerry hopes that the two factors – the pricing and physical QWERTY keypad – would help it revive its fortunes in India, one of the few markets where BlackBerry was still witnessing growth before launching BB10. The phone will be available from July 20 onwards.

BlackBerry Q5 launched in India for Rs 24,990

On the specifications front, the Q5 bears a striking resemblance to the flagship Q10 with a 3.1-inch 720×720 pixel display sporting a pixel density of 328ppi, 2GB of RAM and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera capable of shooting 720p videos. Some features do get stripped down like a 1.2GHz dual-core processor instead of a 1.5GHz processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera instead of 8-megapixels and 8GB of internal storage instead of 16GB.

The biggest difference, however, is the build quality. The Q10′s premium finish and materials are swapped by plastic in white, black and red options. Even the keypad is a little different than the Q10. Think about it like this – the Q10 would fit in BlackBerry’s erstwhile Bold series while the Q5 would be in the Curve series in terms of both finish and flair.
While the Q5 will certainly have its physical keypad loving audience, the question still remains whether BlackBerry has got its pricing strategy right or not.
