Citing his ailing condition as the reason behind his absence in the recently held national seminar of the BGP, he suggested the BGP to continue with the efforts by creating lobby at the national and regional levels.
The SSP president, a strong supporter of Gorkhaland, further suggested all the political parties of the Darjeeling Hills to come on a joint political platform on the demand of Gorkhaland. Issuing a press communication, the former chief minister opined that in the coming Lok Sabha election, the people of the
Hills should not let any national party to represent the Hills in the Parliament.

“Someone who cannot understand the core issue of the Gorkha community cannot represent them in the Parliament nor will the problems of the Gorkhas be solved by a person who is not acquainted with the issue.  A representative of the same community has to voice the Gorkhaland issue in the Parliament,” Mr Bhandari asserted in the Press statement. He stressed that unity among the parties of the Hills is necessary to have the demand fulfilled. “They should adhere to the chief demand and stick to the same in future,” he maintained.
“The leader who leads the people of the Hills must not sacrifice the longstanding demand until the mission is fulfilled. He should not be misguided by the fulfillment of other meagre demands,” he said. He appealed for unity of the people from the Hills with those from the Terai-Dooars to strengthen the cause of Gorkhaland.
