Sujay Ghatak Darjeeling Congress candidate faces ire of the Hill Congress

12:37 PM
Darjeeling: Sujay Ghatak, the Congress candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, had to face the ire of party leaders in the hills for not turning up at the party office in Darjeeling on the day he filed his nomination.

Ghatak apologised for his oversight and later, he said all differences in the party had been sorted out.

He had filed his nomination before the district magistrate here on March 24. The Congress candidate was accorded a rousing reception on that day by Trinamul supporters who mistook his rally for that of Bhaichung Bhutia.

However, Ghatak was at the receiving end today when he stepped into the Congress (hill) office here. Ghatak immediately went into a huddle with leaders like Nakul Chandra Chhetri, Lawrence P.T. Lama, Chabbi Rai, Hem Rai and K.B. Chhetri.

Waiting journalists could hear the hill leaders tearing apart Ghatak for breaking what they called a Congress tradition. “It has been a tradition of the Congress that candidates first come to the Darjeeling office and the supporters accompany them to file the nominations. Why did you fail to come to the party office? If this is the attitude, then no Congress worker from the hills will vote for you,” a leader was heard shouting at Ghatak.

Ghatak admitted that the hill Congress leaders had shouted at him during the meeting. “I admit that my senior leaders shouted at me today and I also understand their anger. The problem arose because of some miscommunication and I apologised for not coming to the Congress office on that day I filed the nomination. But I am happy that there are no more differences in the party after the meeting. We are part of a big family and at times, such issues do crop up and they get solved also.”

The Congress candidate said he would sit with the hill leaders and finalise the date for a public meeting in Darjeeling. “We are trying to get senior Congress leaders and even Rahul Gandhi to address our meeting in Darjeeling. We want to work towards removing the mental divide between the hills and the plains,” said Ghatak.

Darjeeling - Congress Hill Candidate Lok Sabha 2014

10:35 AM
The Congress today picked a councillor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation as the candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, leaving a section of leaders wondering about the decision as he was considered low profile and didn’t belong to the hills.

Sujay Ghatak, 43, is a member-mayor-in-council (public works) of the Congress-run SMC.

Ghatak, who is also the Youth Congress’s general secretary in Darjeeling district, said he would try to “put up a tough fight” for the Darjeeling seat “despite my not being a resident of the hills”.

“Since the party has assigned me the responsibility to contest the Darjeeling seat, I shall leave no stone unturned to give a tough fight,” he said.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had chosen the party’s vice-president for Darjeeling district, Dawa Narbula, for the Darjeeling seat. The BJP nominee Jaswant Singh, backed by the Morcha, won the election by a margin of over three lakh votes.

Many in the Congress believe a resident of the hills should have been the candidate to bag more votes. “I wonder how Ghatak, a Siliguri councillor, has been chosen for Darjeeling. It appears the party is conceding its defeat by fielding a low profile Siliguri leader for the Darjeeling seat,” said a senior Congress leader.

The hill voters have traditionally decided the winner of the Darjeeling seat because they poll for one candidate en bloc.

Although areas in the plains have more voters, the voting is fractured.

While the Trinamul Congress has fielded footballer Bhaichung Bhutia for the Darjeeling seat, the BJP has chosen its high-profile leader S.S. Ahluwalia, who is being backed by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

The CPM’s candidate is former MP Ananda Pathak’s son Saman Pathak.

With the announcement of its candidate for Darjeeling, the Congress is yet to announce its nominees for the remaining 24 Lok Sabha seats, including Balurghat.

However, state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury had claimed earlier in the day at the state Congress headquarters that a list of the 25 candidates in Bengal would be announced tonight.

The Congress had announced its candidates for 17 Lok Sabha seats on March 8.

Gorkha Rastriya Congress contest L.S. election for merging Darjeeling and Sikkim

10:12 AM
Gorkha Rastriya Congress general secretary Subodh Pakhrin today said his party is contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha election to seek a referendum for merging Darjeeling and Sikkim and to garner wide support for the cause. He further said the GRC does not seek to grab an MP seat and enjoy the privileges, and its sole objective is of a Darjeeling-Sikkim merger.

Darjeeling is a lost territory of Sikkim and it was never a part of Bengal. The land of Darjeeling must be returned to its rightful owner, added Pakhrin.

According to the GRC leader, his party’s demand has been considered positively by national level leaders as it seeks unification and not separation. He said the leaders have supported the GRC’s demand, but at the same time they have asked for a mandate from the people of the Darjeeling hills on the issue making public support for the issue vital.

Pakhrin admitted that the GRC does not enjoy huge public support, but insisted its issue has depth, which is difficult to cast aside. “Truth is always a bitter pill to swallow, but truth has always triumphed in the end. Our support base is increasing, hence we are fighting the election to seek public mandate and highlight the issue of the Sikkim-Darjeeling merger,” he remarked.

The GRC leader also informed the party has already met leaders from Sikkim and Darjeeling a number of times on the issue. Besides, the GRC has also hobnobbed on a regular basis with intellectuals and supporters of the idea.

The GRC has announced party president Nima Lama as its candidate from Darjeeling constituency for the Lok Sabha election.
