Darjeeling wins eight gold medals in 35th Senior & Junior Taekwondo Championship

10:02 PM
The Darjeeling Hills has helped Bengal achieve a rare record feat of winning eleven medals and also making it the team champions, in the recently concluded 35th Senior and Junior Taekwondo Championship held in Mumbai from January 22 to 24.

Darjeeling represented Bengal in the event and in the process managed to get eight of the gold medals and four silver and six bronze out of the total of 9 and 10, respectively. “It is a huge achievement for us.

This is the first time that Bengal has managed to get such haul of gold medals in an event. And I am proud that Darjeeling has played a major role,” said Bikash Chhetri, president of the Darjeeling Amateur Taekwondo Association (DATA), today in press conference in Darjeeling.

The competition which had participants from 24 states was organized by the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) at Sachewalaya Gymkhana Colabain Mumbai, last month. From Bengal 41 members participated out of which 20 were from the Hills.
Darjeeling wins eight gold medals in 35th Senior & Junior Taekwondo Championship

In the selection process held in December 2015, from the Hills 18 were selected for the state championship, winning gold. They were then selected for the national championship. “Our effort has paid off with the Hills winning so many gold medals. It is also a big feat that Bengal emerged the team champions in the event,” Chhetri said. Ratan Century, one of the two coaches who helped the students achieve the feat reasoned that availability of proper equipments had played a major role. “One of the main reasons that we feel that the performance of the participants from the hills was good apart from their hard work was that they got to practice with proper equipments which was not the case just a couple of years back. We thank the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) for providing us the equipment worth Rs.2 lakh which includes mats, arm, chin and chest guards and head gears among other things,” he said.

The coach however rued the fact that the individual equipments could not provided as they were few in numbers. Also lack of practice halls hindered the participants. “We had thee equipments but they were small in numbers compared to the participants. We also did not have a practice hall. We had to use the premises of Turnbull school and Gymkhana club,” Century said.

The DATA comprises members from the Northern Taekwondo Academy, Taekwondo Sporting Academy and Himalayan Taekwondo Sports Training Centre which has links with the school along with Gymkhana.

Fifteen year old Iccha Malla, who won a gold medal in the national championship this year said, “It has been five years that I have started learning Taekwondo and have also won a few gold medals in the state championships. But this is the first time that I have won gold in a national championship and it feels good. This time I have learnt that there are many good players and that more practice and hard work is needed if I want to continue winning.”

Gorkha runner wins Amway Darjeeling Police Marathon - Triumphs Over Kenyan and Ethiopian Runners

8:04 AM
Writes: Vivek Chhetri
The Amway Darjeeling Police Marathon had international participants, from as far away as Ethiopia and Kenya, but the winner in the male category was a Darjeeling runner.
Around 1,500 runners took part in the 21km half marathon which was flagged off at Sukhiapokhri today.
The event was organised by Darjeeling police in association with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration to commemorate the 153th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
Ajay Chhetri, 22, from Shivgram in Darjeeling who started running after joining the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles two years ago, stole the show by winning in the male category. Punjab's Kiranjeet Kaur, 22, won in the women's category.
"When I joined the Army, the officers asked me to concentrate on marathons after watching me do cross-country running during training. It is then that I put on my running shoes. I came fourth in this marathon last year. I am happy to win this year," said Chhetri.
Ajay Chhetri, 22, from Shivgram in Darjeeling
In the past two years, Chhetri has run six half marathons across India.
Today, he completed the run, from Sukhiapokhri to Chowrasta, in 1 hour 10 minutes and 39 seconds.
From the start to the finish line, Chhetri held the lead with two Ethiopian and two Kenyan runners following him closely.
Tewodros Haile, 32, from Ethiopia, came second clocking 1 hour, 11 minutes and 5 seconds. "The run was beautiful, but I had never trained for a marathon in a hilly terrain. After 18km, I was extremely tired," he said.
Haile added that he has taken part in 11 marathons across the world. "I have run in Ukraine and United States among other countries. Even in India, I have participated in six marathons so far," he said.
The four Ethiopian and Kenyans runners came to know about the event from the Internet. "We usually browse the net to find out about marathons and that is how we came to Darjeeling," Haile said.
Vikash Kumar from Delhi was the second runner-up in the men's catergory.
In the women category, Kiranjeet clocked 1 hour 25 minutes 8 seconds. Seema Khatoon, from Delhi, and Monika Chowdhury, from Uttar Pradesh, were the first and second runners-up, respectively.
The winners in both men and women categories got a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh each.
The first and second runners-up won a Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 each, respectively.
Darjeeling superintendent of police, Amit P. Javalgi, said: "This year, we had runners from Ethiopia and Kenya and different parts of our country. Nearly 1,500 people ran, including 200 women. The event is organised to promote peace and harmony between the plains and the hills and promote Darjeeling as an environment-friendly tourist place. We are happy with the turnout.

Darjeeling to organize 60km cycle rally on 1st January 2016

10:05 AM
Darjeeling 24 Dec 2015 Adventure tour operators of Darjeeling, with support from the district administration and the police department, will organise a 60km cycle rally on January 1 with the twofold aim of promoting cycling in the hills as a tourism activity and in helping reduce pollution emitted by vehicles. The cycling event has been christened ‘Rally for Vehicle Free Day’ and will start from Chowrastha and end in Mirik.

According to the tour operators, cycling as a tourist activity is fast becoming a fad since the past two years and the demand from tourists and locals alike have forced them to think of promoting the activity extensively in the hills. Young entrepreneur Sangey Sherpa, who is a tour operator and one of the organising members, said, “The cycle rally is being held on New Year’s day. This is symbolic as we want the year 2016 to remain pollution free.
Presently, vehicles plying in the hills are excess causing rising pollution and affecting the weather pattern. The primary objective of the event is to spread awareness among people against excessive use of vehicles in order to curb rising pollution in the region. Besides, we also want to promote adventure tourism in the hills. Darjeeling is a tourist destination with many tourist spots, and we also want to promote the region as a traveller’s destination. Tourists should get the facility of cycling in the beautiful area during their stay.”

Asserting that cycling facilities are among the key demands of tourists, Urgen Sherpa, another tour operator and also a member of the event organising committee, said, “It has been two years or so now since tourists have started showing an interest in cycling as an activity. We have started offering mountain bikes on hire. Apart from tourists, locals are also keen showing interest in the activity. About 80 bookings are done every month, except during the monsoon season.”

According to Urgen, adventure tour operators who provide bicycles on hire charge anything between Rs800 and Rs1,000 per day. He added that tourists usually prefer cycle trips in the outskirts of Darjeeling town in places such as Rambhi, Sukhaypokhari and Lamahatta. “We also offer packages that include a cycle ride up to Dhotrey from Darjeeling following which there is a trekking route to Tonglu and a night halt. The following day starts with a trek up to Manebhanjyang and back to Darjeeling. We not only offer cycles on hire, but also arrange for accommodation and food along with guides. This roughly comes up to Rs3,500 per person to Rs4,000,” said Urgen.

Speaking about the upcoming cycle rally, Sangey said, “Until now, 60 people have registered for participation in the cycle rally and many more are expected to join on the day of the event. We believe the message of using vehicles in a limited manner will spread further.”

Gorkha's daughters selected for Mount Everest expedition

7:32 AM

Writes: Vivek Chhetri

Two college girls from Darjeeling have been selected for a 10-member expedition team to scale Mount Everest organised by the NCC in May 2016.

Trishala Gurung, 22, a second-year  student of Southfield College, and Sulaxchana Tamang, 21, a first-year student of Ghoom Degree College in Darjeeling, did not have NCC wings in their college.

They have undergone training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and have climbed Mount Deo Tibba (19,688 feet) in Himachal Pradesh and Mount Trishul (23,353ft) in Uttarakhand before being selected for the expedition

"After our performances during the selection, we were asked to join the NCC at Darjeeling Government College through a process of open enrolment," said Sulaxchana.

The duo came to know about their selection trial through a notice on their college board.

"During the selection, 100 girls were told to do a basic mountaineering course at the HMI in Darjeeling early this year and 40 students were selected for the Mount Deo Tibba expedition in May this year. After this expedition, 15 girls were selected to climb Mount Trishul in September and finally 10 girls were selected for the expedition to scale Mount Everest in May 2016,"said Trishala.

On November 24, Trishala's father Ganesh Kumar Gurung, who is a businessman, received an email from the office of the director-general, NCC, confirming the selection of Trishala and Sulaxchana along with eight other girls. In January next year, the duo would leave for Siachen for a three-week training at the Army Mountaineering Institute.

The two are leaving no stone unturned to maintain their physical fitness.

"I jog along the Mall Road and have joined a gym here. I exercise for around two-three hours in the morning and after lunch, I carry a load of 10kg and walk uphill between 6 and 10km every day and also meditate in between," said Trishala, who was inspired to climb the hills after seeing her dad's photograph in snowy mountains which were taken during his course at the HMI.

"The two girls could not sit for their examinations because of the selection expeditions. Even this year, they might not be able to sit for the university examinations as these are scheduled around the Everest expedition time. This would lead to two years of loss in their studies," said Ganesh.

"I have approached the North Bengal University and requested them to work out a system so that Trishala does not lose another year. The university authorities have agreed to discuss the issue at the executive committee meeting", said the principal of Southfield College.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but I am also concerned about my studies," said Trishala. The parents are happy but also worried for their daughter.

The two girls are excited. "Our experiences suggest that the 10 members of the team have to remain united at all times. One small carelessness in those mountains could mean the end of the expedition," said Sulaxchana.

Shiva Thapa: Heroes Of Indian Combat Sports

8:44 AM

India is known to have produced numerous talented boxers who have made a mark at the global stage. From the great Hawa Singh in the 1960s to the likes of Mary Kom, Akhil Kumar and Vijender Singh, these athletes have made the nation proud on several occasions. In this edition of Heroes of Combat Sports, we take a look at the journey of the country’s youngest Olympian, 21-year-old Shiva Thapa.

The young boxer has already grown into a mature athlete and will be one of India’s strongest contenders at the 2016 Olympics.

Combat sports in blood

Born on 8th December 1993, in Guwahati, Shiva Thapa is the youngest of six children. His father, Padam Thapa was a Karate instructor at Assam and his elder brother Gobind Thapa was a National level boxing champion. Gobind Thapa has won numerous accolades including National Medals and Best Boxer Awards in various competitions. At a very young age, Shiva Thapa had taken a liking towards boxing and used to watch Mike Tyson’s bouts with great interest.

Olympic Gold Quest comes to Shiva Thapa’s aid

As Shiva Thapa managed his studies and training comfortably, Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ), a non-profit organization, which boosts Indian sporting talent, identified him as an enormous talent. The organization went on to make him a part of their ‘Vision 2016’ initiative. Former Indian hockeycaptain Viren Rasquinha had high regard for Thapa at the time of his association with OGQ and stated how a talented boxer like him needed proper grooming.

Amateur career and road to 2012 London Olympics

In 2008, Shiva Thapa participated at the Children of Asia. International Sports Games in Moscow and won the bronze medal. This achievement earned him a place in the Indian contingent that was travelling to Armenia for the Junior World Boxing Championships. Thapa won a bronze medal in the 52-kg weight category and was the only Indian medal-winner.

String of silver medals in 2010

After a semifinal loss at  the Asian Youth Boxing Championship, Shiva Thapa entered the finals of the Youth World    Amateur Boxing Championships. An injured fist in the semifinal bout cost him the match and he had to be content with the silver medal. Post this success, Shiva Thapa qualified for the Youth Olympics and had a good run in the tournament with a bronze medal finish in the 54-kg category.

The 2012 Asian Olympic Qualifiers were held in Astana, Kazakhstan, where Shiva Thapa defeated Syria’s Wessam Salamana 18–11 to clinch the gold medal. The result saw him qualify for the 2012 London Olympics in 56-kg category. He, however, lost in the first round of the London Olympics, losing 9–14 to Oscar Valdez Fierro of Mexico in the Bantamweight category.

WSB contract for Shiva Thapa in 2013

In July 2013, Shiva emerged victorious at the Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. He became the youngest Indian to achieve this feat. He also participated in the World Boxing Championships of the same year and went on to reach the quarterfinals in his debut stint. As he continued to grow in stature as a boxer, the World Series Boxing offered Shiva Thapa a contract for professional boxing. He became one of the first Indian boxers to receive the contract. Currently, Shiva Thapa is world no. 3 in the Bantamweight category as per the AIBA rankings.

Thapa is also an active promoter of social causes and participates in marathons and walkathons intended to raise funds for charity. We wish the young boxer from Assam all the very best for his next big mission: the 2016 Olympics.

Shiva Thapa: Punching Above His Weight

11:10 AM

Shiva Thapa is only 21, but is already the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and Vikas Krishan to win a World Championship medal. Like most achievements by Indian champions, Shiva Thapa’s bantamweight bronze in the World meet at Doha in October 2015 is the result of a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

Since Shiva’s father, Padam Thapa was a man of modest means. He did not think twice before selling his house, his land and his small-scale factory in Guwahati where he made make steel furniture – “only because nothing is more important to me than an Olympic medal.” Shiva Thapa’s tryst with the Olympic medal may be on hold but a World Championship medal is a no mean return.

After four daughters, his wife and Padam Thapa had two sons Govind and Shiva. So intent was the karate instructor that his offspring should reach the highest echelons of sport, he researched and concluded that there was maximum opportunity in an individual sport like boxing. So Govind and Shiva were initiated into boxing when they were nine and seven respectively and training began in their living room itself, where a punching bag was up.

An Early Start
While Padam Thapa picked up enough boxing to be able to coach them and spared no efforts to support their training, also ensuring that their education did not suffer either, the boys embraced his dream as their own. They did not protest much even when they were made to wake up as early as 3-30 a.m., so that they had enough time to study as well as train.

Shiva was first noticed at age 12, when he won his first sub-juniors gold in Noida, and was invited to train at Army Sports Institute, Pune. He continued with his sterling performances, winning silver at the Youth World Championships and Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, in 2010. Shiva marked his entry among the seniors with a gold winning performance at the Super Cup in Mumbai in May 2011, following it up with an international title winning performance, with a victory over the reigning world champion Dalakliev Detelin in Belgrade in September 2011.

Education Not Neglected
He notched up gold at the National championship at Karaikkudi in Tamil Nadu in December that year. And despite the disappointment in the Olympic Games in London in 2012, the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in 2014, Shiva Thapa was able to justify his talent by winning the Asian Championship title in 2013.

Brimming with confidence, this new age boxer relies more on intelligence and skill to hold him up in the ring, rather than aggression and brute strength, a hallmark of the earlier lot of successful boxers from Haryana. Shiva is amongst the new breed of sportspersons, who believe in educating themselves and pursued BA through correspondence.

To be an inspiration for younger boxers at just 21 years of age is quite something, isn’t it?

Shiva Thapa became the highest-ranked Indian boxer

6:36 PM

NEW DELHI: Shiva Thapa on Tuesday became the highest-ranked Indian boxer, zooming to second in the latest international rankings after winning a bronze medal at last month's World Championships in Doha.

Shiva was placed second with 1550 points in the 56kg category, up five places from the previous list. The top spot was occupied by Irishman Michael Conlan (2150 points), who won the gold medal at the World Championships.

The 22-year-old Shiva became only the third Indian ever to clinch a medal at the showpiece event after Vijender Singh (2009, bronze) and Vikas Krishan (2011, bronze).

Vikas, who lost in the quarterfinals of the Doha event, was the next best-placed Indian at sixth in the 75kg middleweight division.

The Asian Championships silver-medallist is fighting in a category which Vijender made his own before turning professional earlier this year.

Satish Kumar, who was also a quarterfinalist in Doha, took the seventh spot in the rankings for super heavyweight (+91kg) boxers.

Another Asian Championships silver-medallist, L Devendro Singh, occupies the 13th spot in the 49kg category. The youngster from Manipur lost in the second round of the world meet following a cut above his right eye. He has 550 points in his kitty.

Former Asian gold-medallist Sumit Sangwan, who has been laid low by injury, was placed 18th in the 81kg division with 450 points. Manoj Kumar also occupies the 18th spot in the light welterweight 64kg list.

Gaurav Bhiduri, who created a flutter by notching up some good wins in the World Series of Boxing's season gone by, is placed 37th in the 52kg category.

In the 69kg category, former Asian silver-medallist Mandeep Jangra held the 58th position.

Sunil Chhetri's hat-trick makes him top goal scorer in ISL

10:32 PM

• With six strikes from four games, Chhetri has shot his way to joint-top spot in the goalscorers' list.

• His efforts helped Mumbai rise from the bottom of the ISL standings to a top-4 spot with three wins on the trot.

• A tactical switch in his position has led to Chhetri's goal-scoring spree.

MUMBAI: The rate at which he's finding the back of the net in the second edition of the Indian Super League (ISL), Mumbai City FC striker Sunil Chhetri appears to be making up for lost time having had to watch the inaugural season as a mere spectator. With six strikes from four games, including a hat-trick in Mumbai's last fixture against NorthEast United, making him the first Indian to achieve the feat in the ISL, Chhetri has shot his way to joint-top spot in the goalscorers' list.

His efforts helped Mumbai rise from the bottom of the ISL standings to a top-4 spot with three wins on the trot. And that is what matters more to the Indian national team captain visa-vis his personal feat.

"Without wanting to sound cliched, it doesn't matter about the goals. I'm so happy that we've got three wins," Chhetri told TOI during a visit to a local Puma store on Friday.

"If I had scored a hat-trick and we'd lost 5-3, we'd have been in deep trouble. Things weren't great after the first three games, so it was very important for us to get wins. I'm happy that I got the goals but I'm more happy that we won those matches."

So the obvious question is what has sparked this emphatic turnaround?

"Just the fact that we understood that we were underperforming," replied Chhetri. "Say if you are not a very fancy team, don't have the firepower, you're giving everything and still losing, then fine. But if you do have the signings, the players, and still under-performing, then that's a worry. We weren't doing justice to our talent. Thankfully we have put that right," he added.

It's no coincidence that, in the 31-year-old's case, a tactical switch in his position from playing in a wide role in his first outing against Chennaiyin FC to occupying the hole between midfield and attack has led to Chhetri's goal-scoring spree.

"All my life really, I have played either as a No. 9 or 10. It's just for Bengaluru (his I-League club) that I have played as a winger. But here, because the (DY Patil) ground is big and I was really wide, I didn't get the ball at all against Chennai and I got frustrated. I was chasing the ball like a headless chicken. Then both Nico (Anelka) and Oscar (assistant coach) came to me and said 'where do you want to play?' I said, 'I'm fine with playing anywhere but I wasn't getting enough balls'. They put me in the number 10 position and thankfully it has worked," said Chhetri.

Perhaps an ominous sign for Mumbai's opponents is the fact that marquee player-manager Nicolas Anelka has barely featured in their six games so far due to a groin issue. Chhetri certainly sounded encouraged by that fact. "We have scored 10 goals and Anelka hasn't even started yet," he said, adding: "I just can't wait to have him in the 11 soon. He's in the last part of his rehab, so hopefully you'll see him soon."

Shiva Thapa wins Bronze, Loses Olympic Quota Box-Off

8:41 AM
A bronze medal in his kitty, Indian boxer Shiva Thapa could not add the Olympic quota place to it despite a valiant effort in a hard-fought box-off of the World Championships in Doha.

Shiva (56kg), who became only the third Indian ever to clinch a medal at the mega-event after Vijender Singh (2009) and Vikas Krishan (2011), went down to Belarus' Dzmitry Asanau despite a dominating performance.

"We were expecting this bout to go our way. Shiva fought very well and it is unfortunate that he lost this bout," national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said.

The 21-year-old from Assam, the only one from the six-member contingent to be left in reckoning for the Olympic berth, was on the offensive from the very first bell, daring his rival with an open guard.
Besides his very accurate left hook, the Indian also used his right jabs to good effect. However, despite combining his blows with lucid foot movement, which helped him dodge Asanau effectively, the Indian did not find favour with the judges.

The 19-year-old Asanau, a European Games silver-medallist, continued his defensive approach in the second round and did not come on the front foot even once. However, the approach found favour with judges yet again and he nosed ahead 2-0.

In the final three minutes, Shiva attacked with all his might and put Asanau under pressure with his aggressive approach.

However, Shiva aggression could not trump Asanau's defensive tactics and the judges unanimously awarded the bout to the Belarussian.

India thus ended their campaign with one bronze medal but failed to secure a single Olympic quota place.

Pistol king Jitu Rai feeling 2016 Rio Olympics pressure

9:51 AM
Jitu Rai places his pistol in front of him and glances at the monitor. 9.2, the scoreboard reads. He shakes his head disapprovingly, readies himself for the next shot. He shoots, and repeats the whole thing again. The half-full finals hall at the Karni Singh Shooting Range lets out a collective gasp as the score flashes on the screen — 9.6.

Those two 9s peg him back in his quest to finish on top of the podium in the 10m air pistol event at the Asian Airgun Championships. From first in the eight-man final, he is now fourth. A few yards behind Rai, national team pistol coach Pavel Smirnov furiously scribbles some notes. Rai recovers, shooting a 10.0 in his next shot, but it is followed by four shots in the 9s in the following seven. The home favourite eventually had to settle for bronze, behind Iran’s surprise winner Safari Boroujeni (198.7) and compatriot Gurpreet Singh, who shot 197.6.

He was lucky even to finish on the podium. Rai was on the verge of exiting after 16 shots but Saudi Arabia’s Alnazi Atallah, who was in silver medal position, choked and recorded a dismal 7.2 in the elimination shot to bow out and give Rai a freash lease of life. But Rai, ever so calm and unflappable in pressure situations, fumbled. Yet again.

Hours earlier, Rai had shot a remarkable 583 in the qualifying round — a score that would have earned him a berth in the final of any top shooting event, let alone the Asian Airgun where the field was rather modest. It was his highest qualifying score this season, better than Changwon World Cup (581) where he had won a bronze medal as well.

However, Rai hasn’t been able to convert the high qualifying scores into medal-winning performances in the final, where shooters have to start from zero.

After a high-flying 2014, Rai’s form seems to have plateaued this year. By this time last season, the 28-year-old had won an unprecedented six international medals. In 2015, however, he has only two bronze medals, including Tuesday’s, to show for his efforts.

Pistol coach Smirnov believes Rai, billed as one of India’s top medal prospects in Rio next year, is starting to feel the pressure as the expectations rise and the Games approach. “I think we could have done much better today. Our performance in pressure situations isn’t the best. We have to get better at it,” Smirnov says. “I guess shooters start to feel pressure as the Olympics get closer. But it’s not a concern as we know how to deal with it.”

Smirnov’s observation is not restricted to Rai alone. Gurpreet, who too has won an Olympic quota, also has had a fabulous season in terms of the scores he has recorded. But in an overall field that shoots higher scores, he has failed to deliver in the final.

The shooting team’s mental trainer Vaibhav Agashe rates Rai as one of the fittest marksmen in the country. He says Rai indulges a lot in mental rehearsal and visualization techniques, which help him in improving his scores. One such aspect that Rai has been working on is recreating the scenarios he faces in the final during his training sessions.

“I have been shooting good scores, so that’s one thing I take confidence from. But in the final, something’s missing. It’s more about mental and physical training in the final and the only way to improve it is by competing in as many finals as we can. During training, we practice final format. We replicate scenarios we face in the final of big tournaments and prepare ourselves for the big occasion,” Rai says.

The shooter, however, insists he has been dealing with pressure well, but sometimes tries too hard after getting a good start, which then derails his plans. “I have been dealing with pressure well, I feel. But you can always improve. We have to think about the Olympics as any other shooting competition. After all, we will face the same shooters against whom we compete for rest of the year. Olympics, of course, are big but we can’t be intimidated by it,” he says.

Mary Kom alleged Regional Bias Against Her

1:06 AM
"Sometimes I feel very upset. Some of the referees and judges do not favour me but I don’t mind. Okay I am from north-east, no problem, but I am still an Indian" - Mary Kom

Boxing star,  Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom gets emotional during a fund-raising event in Mumbai on Wednesday night and accused the Indian selectors of regional bias during boxing selection and trails.

Mary Kom alleged that Haryana's Pinky Jangra is being repeatedly favoured by the selectors.

"There are so many controversies. Pinky Jangra, I always defeat her and prove it to get a gold medal in every competition but they (boxing selectors) continue to support her," she said.

"I will show who I am in the ring, that's all. I don't want to fight outside the ring actually. Whether this is fair or not fair.... well sometimes I feel very upset whether some of the referees/judges are not favour to me... But I doesn't mind (sic)," she said. "Okay, I am from northeast, no problem. But I'm Indian, I'm doing well in the ring."

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday that there was no question of anybody discriminating against Manipur-based champion boxer Mary Kom or any other player taking part in the forthcoming Olympics in Rio, Brazil, and added that all players will get full financial or any other support they require to perform to the best of their ability ahead of the 2016 Games.

“From our ministry side, whatever support the players are asking by submitting their proposal and also the federation we are fully supporting them. That’s why we are giving the adequate budget to all the federation. So, in the near future they ask anything more we are ready to support so this is the objective we have already set and this is the target we have set for the Rio Olympics,” Sonowal told media.

This is not the first time Mary Kom has spoken out against boxing’s biased selection process. The bronze medalist from the London Olympics in 2012 was dropped from the contingent that represented India at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Pinky Jangra was given her spot after she beat Mary in a bout she claimed was poorly scored.

Gorkha boys wins football match with Santhal students at Visva Bharati, Shantiniketan

Amidst Chorus of "Jai Gorkha” - Gorkha Boys Win Handsomely at Shantiniketan

Writes: Bicky Sharma
There is a certain festivity about football which compels the hidden extrovert in all of us to be exposed. I have been on campus here for a week now, and all the people I had met seemed docile, quiet, gentle and bolda pani suttukai bolne... that was till yesterday.
Gorkha Boys football tead that Won Handsomely at Shantiniketan
Gorkha Boys football tead that Won Handsomely at Shantiniketan
The occasion was a football match between Gorkha vs. Santhal students at Visva Bharati, Shantiniketan. The match was organized by the University Sports Board.

The Santhalis are well known locally for their power and speed and are regarded as one of the best teams around. So when the seniors asked us to come cheer for the Gorkha Boys we all did go, but we were worried how they would perform.

That is when I got to see the hidden-Extroverts in all of our Gorkhali students, both Male and Female…
The game was a tough match-up from the word go, and that is what released the inner beast in all of us – shouts of “tyeslai landaunu naa dey”…. “khuttama de.. tyesko khutta ma dey”… started to be heard all through the match…

As the referee blew the half time whistle our guys had already scored 2 goals, each goal followed by loud cheers and screams of all our guys and girls following the game. There was a definite sense of enthusiasm and camaraderie amongst the students present to cheer OUR team… it was also a good opportunity for a new student like me to interact with everyone present.
The game started again, the Santhali students played their hearts out, but our players were better, more confident and also with all the cheer-up coming from the audience they were also more determined and buoyed.

At one point the Santhai team got a penalty… all of us became tensed, but we need not have worried, Hamro Keeper was really Chumbak Jasto... as the young goal keeper saved the penalty, it brought everyone to their feet... cheering... shouting... yelling...

When the referee blew the final whistle the Gorkha boys had won handsomely at 4 : 0…. I really felt proud at the moment when cries of JAI GORKHA… JAI GORKHA… began to reverberate in and around the ground.

Everyone is aware of the love for football we all share, what makes it more special, is the unity desplayed by our folks this far away from home.

It clearly depicts the unity and bonding that we all have, no matter where we are. The bonhomie is a blissful and blessed sight and we hope that the brotherhood like this spreads throughout Gorkhas in India.

Congratulations to the team... and Three Cheers for the Gorkhas of Viswa Bharati University!!
Hip Hip.... Hurrah!!
