24th July 2016 J&K Salutes the service and sacrifice of ‪ brave heart Naik Anup Kumar Thapa, 1/3 Gorkha Rifles, who lost his life in action fighting Pakistani terrorist infilitrators at LoC Kupwara, J&K yesterday.

Terrorists attempting to infiltrate (from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) were intercepted by alert troops in the intervening night of July 22-23 which led to exchange of fire and forced the infiltrators to flee. Nk Thapa sustained injuries in the gun battle and unfortunately later succumbed.

Army today paid homage to Naik Anup Kumar Thapa, who was killed in exchange of fire when troops foiled an infiltration bid by militants from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara yesterday.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel N N Joshi said Army paid rich tributes to the valour and martyrdom of Naik Thapa here.

“The brave soldier was part of his unit’s Specialist Operational Team that intercepted a group of militants, which was attempting to infiltrate from across the Line of Control (LoC),” he said.

Col Joshi said in the ensuing exchange of fire, Naik Thapa sustained a gunshot wound, but unmindful of his injuries, he continued to engage the militants till the time they fled back.

“Naik Thapa was given first aid at the encounter site itself and thereafter evacuated, but unfortunately, the brave heart succumbed to his injuries,” he said.

Son of a priest from Dehradun, Naik Anup was known by his comrades as an extremely dedicated soldier who would not hesitate from taking on one challenging assignment after another.

“The 41-year-old soldier joined the Army at the tender age of 19 and had a lot of experience in counter militant operations, having had a previous tenure in Rashtriya Rifles also,” he said.

A ‪‎Gorkha‬ Soldier from ‪Assam‬ Martyred While Stopping Militants from Crossing LoC in Kashmir Arun Kumar Rai, a 1/3 Gorkha Rifles jawan hailing from Burha Burhi village, ‪Sadiya‬ in ‪‎Tinsukia‬ district of Assam was martyred on Monday along the Line of Control (‪‎LoC‬) in Jammu and Kashmir's ‪‎Kupwara‬ district when the army battled guerrillas who tried to sneak in from ‪Pakistan‬.

Army’s 1/3 GR and 100 battalion of Border Security Forces (BSF), who are manning the fence at 3 BEHAK forest area near Jumgund in Keran sector, intercepted heavily armed group of militants last night at around 12.30 am.

After being challenged, the group of militants believed to be infiltrators opened fire resulting in an encounter in which an Army jawan identified as Naik Arun Kumar Rai sustained serious bullet injuries. He was immediately evacuated to military hospital in the frontier of district. However, he succumbed to his injuries.

Army said that they have killed two Al- Badar militants in an encounter at Nowgam sector in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

SAS Soldier chopped and killed 3 ISIS terrorists with khukuri

A Special Air Service (SAS) soldier reportedly stabbed to death three ISIS members with a traditional Gorkha knife when the militants tried to abduct him in Fallujah. The SAS soldiers are reportedly fighting Daesh (as ISIS is also known as) in Libya and Iraq, advising curter attacks and also occasionally taking part in fighting.

The SAS has been operating in Iraq for years. They are responsible for assassinating Jihadis high-up in the ranks of terrorist organizations and in assisting other forces fighting against the ISIS.

According to reports, earlier in June this year, a SAS snipper debarred two men with a single bullet from carrying out a car bomb attack.

According to a report by Daily Star, a SAS soldier was caught in a stand-off with the ISIS members with an Iraqi team after the jihadists bombed a factory in Fallujah. Several Iraqi soldiers were killed, and four were seriously injured in the face-off.

The soldier, who quickly went out of ammunition, was left only with the famous Khukuri knife to defend himself.

The 27-year-old Hindu Gorkha soldier had apparently been gifted the Khukuri knife by another British Gorkha soldier.

According to a SAS source,

“As soon as his ammunition was expended, the IS gunmen tried to storm him. As they went to grab him he unsheathed his kukri and began slashing away…He decapitated the first gunman, slit the throat of second and killed another with a third blow. He then sliced away at three others. The IS gunmen fled in panic allowing the SAS soldier to carry the injured men to safety….He expected to be killed but thought he’d take as many of the enemy with him. When he was reunited with Iraqi troops they thought the he was seriously wounded because he was covered in blood but he explained that the blood wasn’t his.”

He added later,

“He cleaned his knife, grabbed some more ammo and then led another Iraqi special forces team into battle.”

सोलन। पाकिस्तानी आतंकवादियों की घुसपैठ को नाकाम कर प्राणों की आहुति देने वाले शहीद लांस नायक अश कुमार गुरुंग शुक्रवार को पंचतत्त्व में विलीन हो गए। सुबाथू के श्मशानघाट में पूरे सैन्य व राजकीय सम्मान के साथ उनका अंतिम संस्कार किया गया। सामाजिक न्याय एवं अधिकारिता मंत्री कर्नल धनी राम शांडिल ने भी सुबाथू पहुंच कर शहीद को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की।

बता दें कि, चार दिन पहले जम्मू-कश्मीर के तंगधार क्षेत्र में पाकिस्तानी आतंकवादियों ने भारतीय सीमा में घुसने का प्रयास किया था। दूसरी तरफ से जब गोलीबारी आरंभ हुई तो सीमा पर तैनात गोरखा राइफल्स के जवानों ने मोर्चा संभाल लिया और आतंकवादियों का डटकर मुकाबला करते हुए आतंकियों को खदेड़ दिया। लेकिन, इसी बीच गोलीबारी में भारतीय सेना के दो जवान शहीद हो गए थे। इनमें से एक 3/1 जीआर के लांस नायक अश कुमार गुरुंग थे। बुधवार को उनका शव हेलीकॉप्टर से सुबाथू लाया गया था और नेपाल से उनके परिजनों के आने की प्रतीक्षा की जा रही थी। शुक्रवार को परिजनों के सुबाथू पहुंचने के बाद शहीद का अंतिम संस्कार किया गया।
इससे पहले शहीद के शव को तिरंगे में लपेट कर श्मशानघाट तक पहुंचाया गया। इस मौके पर सामाजिक न्याय एवं अधिकारिता मंत्री कर्नल धनी राम शांडिल ने शहीद के शव पर पुष्पचक्र अर्पित कर उन्हें भावभीनी श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की। 14 गोरखा प्रशिक्षण केंद्र के कार्यवाहक कमांडेंट कर्नल एचपी सिंह सहित समस्त सैन्यअधिकारियों व जवानों ने शहीद को सलामी दी।

25th June 2016 Jammu and Kashmir Lashkar terrorists ambush 161 battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bus and kills 8 jawans, 22 others reported injured in Jammu and Kashmir's Pampore 5 km from state capital Srinagar on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. The terrorists rained bullets on a bus bus carrying more than 40 jawans which was returning after a firing exercise to Srinagar The attack appeared to be a Fidayeen (suicide attackers) attack carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Despite intelligence inputs about a possible attack in the area and security forces on high alert on Saturday the terrorists were able to carry out the ambush. Hence questions are being raised over whether there were some lapses on part of the forces. The terrorists appeared to have carefully chosen the spot for the ambush as every vehicle has to slow down at the spot because of a sharp curve on the road.

Later, Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for Pampore terror attack, carried out by at least two terrorists, who were carrying AK-47s and hand grenades. According to some accounts two more militants were involved in the attack but there was no official confirmation.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police K Rajendra, who visited the spot, said the two terrorists had been neutralized but "unfortunately we have suffered some causalities too". when asked whether the slain terrorists were from across the border, Rajendra said, "In all probability they seem to be from Pakistan."

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar said "I think the standard operating procedure wasn't followed properly," adding that the situation will be clearer after an inquiry.

Inspector General of CRPF Nalin Prabhat said "First hand impression of the bodies of terrorists is that both appear to be Pakistanis, definitely from Lashksr, and in all likelihood they were fidayeen (suicide attackers),".

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said, "They (terrorists) cannot achieve anything by such attacks..but these acts are only defaming Kashmir; also it's a set back to our religion because they do it under the garb of religion".

“We have learnt that 2 Indian nationals, Ganesh Thapa & Govind Singh from Dehradun, died tragically in the blast in Kabul today morning,” external affairs ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted late on Monday night.

The Taliban and the Islamic State both claimed the first attack, which killed 14 security guards, including the Indians, working for the Canadian embassy in Kabul in a massive blast that left their yellow minibus spattered with blood.

Two Indians were among 25 people killed in a suicide blast in Kabul Monday. Officials said they worked for a private security company, Sabre International, and were probably deployed at the Canadian embassy. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast, which also killed 14 Nepalese guards working for the embassy. A suicide bomber on foot had targeted a mini bus transporting them.

Within hours, a second blast went off inside the vehicle of MP Ataullah Faizani in Chehlsitoon area, injuring him.

The Indian government is working with its Afghan counterpart to repatriate their bodies at the earliest, Swarup said without giving other details. MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, “Ganesh Thapa and Govind Singh from Dehradun died in the blast. The government is in touch with their families and is working to repatriate their mortal remains.”

Soon after a Taliban spokesman on Twitter claimed the attack, the Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan and Pakistan released a competing claim in which it named and pictured the alleged bomber, according to the SITE monitoring group. An Afghan intelligence source said officials were investigating the IS claim, which was denied by the Taliban.

Police said the attack on the security guards was carried out by a suicide bomber on foot on a key road leading east out of Kabul towards Jalalabad. The interior ministry said in a statement that five Nepali citizens and four Afghans were wounded. The Canadian embassy confirmed the “cowardly” attack in a tweet and said it had employed the guards.

20th June 2016 Kabul: A Taliban suicide bomber killed at least 14 people and wounded eight in an attack on a minibus carrying Nepalese security contractors in the Afghan capital, Kabul, early on Monday, officials said.

A Reuters witness saw several apparently dead victims and at least two wounded being carried out of the yellow bus while police and emergency service vehicles surrounded the scene in the Banae district of the city.

The attack was the latest in a recent surge of violence that highlights the challenges faced by the Afghan government in Kabul and its Western backers as Washington slowly draws down its remaining troops despite a persistent insurgency.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on Twitter that 14 people had been killed and eight wounded. Police were working to identify the victims, he said.

The casualties appeared to include both Afghans and Nepalese security contractors, Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.

He said the suicide bomber had waited near the compound housing the security contractors and struck as the vehicle moved through early morning traffic. As well as the bus passengers, several people in an adjacent market were also wounded in the attack, which occurred during Ramadan, Islam`s holy month.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement from the Islamist group`s main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, on Twitter.

A tribute to Gorkha martyr in J&K by comrades and seniors

Kolkata: Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar lived by the motto 'Kayar Hono Banda Marno Ramro (Better to die than to live the life of a coward)' till he breathed his last while fighting terrorists along the Line of Control (LAC) in Tangdhar, Jammu & Kashmir, on Wednesday. On Thursday, he was given a befitting tribute by comrades and seniors at the Badami Bag Cantonment in Srinagar.

Magar, a 'Ghatak' commando of the unit, was part of the team that thwarted an infiltration bid and shot dead four terrorists. In the process, he was martyred. A battle hardened soldier with 18 yrs of distinguished service, Magar had also been actively involved in two previous operations in the same area in which seven terrorists were killed.

The warrior hailed from Sauni village in the Falpa district of Nepal and was a true embodiment of the martial and yet mirthful character that is common to all Gorkhas. It was his ilk that made the late Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw once famously remark, "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he's either lying or he's a Gorkha". The Gorkha Rifles is one of the finest regiments of the Indian Army, many units of which have their recruitment base in Nepal as part of a Britain-India-Nepal tripartite agreement signed at the time of independence in 1947.

The 37 years old martyr, son of a farmer, is survived by his wife Devi Resmi Magar and two children aged 13 and 10 years. His son is named Dol Bahadur and daughter Yogita. Paying glowing tributes to the hero, Lt Gen Satish Dua, commander, Chinar Corps, said: "The nation shall remain indebted to his sacrifice and the present generation as well as posterity will continue to draw inspiration from him." Expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, he reaffirmed the Army's commitment to their well being.

17th June 2016 J&K : Gorkha Prem Bahadur Reshmi Magar martyred in the gunfight with the militants in the Tangdhar sector in J&K. 4 militants were killed in the encounter.The nation pays tribute to the veer jawan Lance Havaldar Prem Bahadur Reshmi of 1 ‪Gorkha‬ Rifles who laid his life at J&K's Tangdhar in encounter with the terrorists.Two troopers were injured in the encounter in Tangdhar.

"Havaldar Prem Bahadur Reshmi Magar was injured and later succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and two children," said Defence Spokesperson N N Joshi, adding that the operation was launched by a team of Gorkha Regiment and Rashtriya Rifles.

The militants' infiltration bid was foiled by security forces when they spotted a group of militants moving from across the border towards the Line of Control at midnight.

The firefight broke when the militants were challenged and opened fire. This is the second infiltration bid in the Kupwara district since Tuesday. The four militants were killed close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Kalban Nar in Tangdhar sector, 185 km from Srinagar. The gunfight erupted early today when the Army noticed movement of a group of heavily armed militants in the sector.

On Wednesday, a signalman of the army succumbed to his injuries and a terrorist was shot dead by the army after militants infiltrated into Kupwara district, near Macchil sector.

Five soldiers were reportedly injured in that operation.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Chinar Corps Commander Lt General Satish Dua led a team of officers and other ranks of the army in paying tributes to the slain signalman by laying a floral wreath on his coffin.

Army sources attributed said the recent spurt in infiltration bids to improvement in weather. So far this year, 54 such attempts have been made and 19 ultras have been killed. Official said over 200 militants are waiting at various launch pads across LoC in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

Manipur Kpi/Spt, Jun 5 : Suspected Kuki militants numbering about four shot and seriously injured a truck driver identified as Sanjeev Pradhan (26) s/o Rudra Bahadur Pradhan of Taphou Nepali village yesterday at about 9.30 pm.

The incident occurred at S-Golai near Changoubung turning when the cadres stopped the truck for monetary demands and fired 20-30 rounds which injured the victim in his abdomen.

The cadres fled the crime scene after puncturing the tyres, destroying the windshield and pumping four bullets into the driver. Soon after the incident, the 35 Assam Rifles Hengbung post immediately rushed to the spot and recovered the driver before providing crucial first aid.

Based on the incident, a police FIR under U/S 400/307/338/427 IPC & 25 (I-C) Act has been lodged at Kangpokpi police station for further investigation. The police recovered more than 25 empty cases of cartridges from the spot today morning.

Meanwhile, the Gorkha Samaj, Senapati has strongly condemned the incident wherein innocent truck driver are targeted by armed cadres for extortion and kidnapping for ransom.

Such incidents of shooting, killing, harassing, kidnapping of drivers and transporters are common along the lifeline of the State. Strongly demanding justice to the victim and keeping NH-2 safe from all such unwanted incidents, the Gorkha Samaj has warned that it will be compelled to launch agitation if those responsible do not come out with clarification within three days deadline.

The Gorkha Samaj, Senapati has also expressed its gratitude to the 35 AR led by Major Gulati, company commander for timely intervention and saving the driver’s lives. Such yeomen service of the 35 AR is acknowledged in truest term and appreciated the noble deeds, it said.

The All Manipur Gorkha Students’(AMGSU) Union has also vehemently condemned the incident and termed the act as ‘notorious’ and unacceptable in society.

The union also urged all to shun anti-social activities in the future.

Gorkha Union Sadar Hills (GUSH) has vehemently condemned the attacked on a truck driver. GUSH general secretary Milan Pradhan condemning the incident said innocent truck drivers are frequently targeted by armed cadres for extortion and kidnapping for ransom along the Imphal-Dimapur road. The union has urged the armed group involved in the attack to stop harassing, killing and abducting drivers along the highway.

Manipur May 22 : Gorkha community deeply condole the sad demise of Mahesh Gurung and 5 other personnel. Mahesh Gurung of 29 Assam Rifles from Dehradun was martyred during a terrorist ambush reportedly by CorCom (Coordination Committee) militants at Hangshi, around 15 km from its battalion headquarters at Joupi village, in Chandel district of Manipur. The ambush took place between Hengshi and Tuiyang villages around 12.30 pm when the JCO and other jawans were returning after inspecting a landslide scene in the locality. Saheed Gurung had joined the duty only past month after spending his holiday at home. Saheed Gurung leaves behind his wife Seema Gurung, a 11 year old son, and a one day old baby daughter.

Six personnel including an officer of the Assam Rifles have been killed in an encounter with terrorists in Manipur's Chandel district. The men belonged to a Quick Reaction Team.

Sources in the government said that an umbrella group of terrorist organisations planned and executed the attack. Four AK rifles, one INSAS Rifle and one LMG rifle have been taken away by the militants. CorCom, which is responsible for many bombings, is an umbrella group in Manipur comprising the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Progressive faction (PREPAK-Pro), Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF – the political wing of the People’s Liberation Army – PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and United Peoples Party of Kangleipak (UPPK).

Home Minister Rajnath Singh - who reviewed the situation with top security officials -- directed the forces to take the "strongest possible action" against the terrorists involved.

Reinforcements have been sent to the area and a massive combing operation is underway.

Last year, 18 army personnel were killed in the same district in an ambush by a group of Naga militants.

According to sources, a group of 4-7 infiltrators who had sneaked into India near Darshan post along the Line of Control (LoC) opposite to Pakistan’s Chhajula Post.

The group of infiltrators were intercepted by the army’s 3/1 GR in the dense forest area. The group of infiltrators after being challenged opened indiscriminate fire with sophisticated weapons upon the forces, the fire was retaliated by the army ensuing a fierce gunfight, they said.

Following a fierce gunfight four army men including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Subedar BB Thapa and Ankit Pradhan, Aash Kumar Gurung and Bishal Gurung sustained serious bullet injuries.

In the initial gunfight, four army men, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Subedar BB Thapa sustained serious bullet injuries. However, among the injured, three soldiers succumbed to injuries before being evacuated to army’s 92 base hospital here in Srinagar, they said, adding that the condition of the officer is also said to be critical.

The troops managed to kill one terrorist, and push by the rest, who fled to Pakistan.

Bail plea of the arrested in the Rangli-Rangliot Assam arms case rejected

The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Darjeeling on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Umesh Kami and Ganesh Chhetri arrested in the Rangli-Rangliot arms case. However, the prayer for extension of police remand for the two was also turned down.

Kami and Chhetri were produced in the Darjeeling court on December 15 and were sent to judicial custody for one day. On December 16 the two were sent to six days’ police remand by the CJM court.

The DIB who is investigating the Rangli-Rangliot arms case had sought an extension remand to investigate further but was overruled by the CJM court during the day. The bail plea of the two accused were also rejected.

The court on Tuesday sent the two arrested to judicial custody. They would next have to be produced for the hearing on January 30, 2015. “The court sent the two arrested to judicial custody and will have to be produced next year. This is because the court will be closed for the winter from tomorrow. Our extension plea for remand was also rejected,” said Pankaj Prasad, the assistant public prosecutor.

Darjeeling, Dec. 24: Members of the NSCN (Khaplang) faction had stayed in Darjeeling in July and Sanjay Thulung, the expelled Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader wanted in the Assam arms haul case, organised their hotel stay, according to police sources.

The NSCN(K), which is not banned by the Centre, is a secessionist outfit accused of several attacks on security forces in Nagaland.

The police sources did not give details on whether the purported NSCN(K) members held talks with any political leader in the hills. One of their leaders Sanjay Chhetri, who is mentioned in an arms case FIR along with Thulung, was among the NSCN(K) members who visited Darjeeling in July, the police source said.

The district Intelligence Branch is probing a case related to the recovery of a rifle, 22 rounds of live ammunition and five leaflets of a little-known outfit called the Gorkhaland Liberation Army. The seizure of arms and ammunition was made at 27th Mile in Darjeeling on December 6.

Police in Darjeeling have linked this seizure to the one in Assam on November 8 when the police in the neighbouring state seized an M16 rifle, two Beretta pistols, three .32-bore pistols, 300 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 80 rounds of AK-series ammunition, 198 rounds of M16 ammunition and 60 rounds of .32 ammunition.

Two persons, Umesh Kami and Ganesh Chhetri, were arrested when they were transporting the arms from Assam to north Bengal.

A police source said: "Sanjay Chhetri, a resident of Dimapur and a member of the NSCN(K), had come to Darjeeling along with several members. During their stay in July this year, they were also accompanied by women and children. They probably were family members."

The police source today said that Kami, who is a GTA worker, had revealed during interrogation details about the visit of the supposed NSCN(K) members to Darjeeling in July.

The CID here arrested Kami and Ganesh Chhetri against a pending FIR related to an arms case in Bhaktinagar, near Siliguri, in January this year.

The police source said that after the first Darjeeling visit, the NSCN(K) leaders "left for Pashupatinagar in Nepal, and then to Kalimpong. After staying in Kalimpong for two days, they returned to Darjeeling and checked into another hotel for a night. We are being told that the bookings were done by Sanjay Thulung."

The investigators have seized the registers of both the hotels and the source said that the entries in them confirmed that one of the visitors was Sanjay Chhetri.

The CID in its FIR in the December 6 arms haul had said that Sanjay Chhetri, Rahul Chhetri and Diku Chhetri, all residents of Nagaland's Dimapur and alleged members of the NSCN(K), had sold the arms seized in Assam. Thulung was named in the FIR.

Kokrajar, November 8: The second incident of Assam arms haul revealed on Wednesday following Assam police arrested Bhagirath Chettri, resident of Jalpaiguri, along with 7.5mm pistol and heavy ammunitions in Chirang district under Bodo Territorial Administration region. It is reported that these arms consignment was being prepared to deliver in Darjeeling by Bhagirath Chettri.

In the same village where Ganesh Chettri and Umesh Kami were arrested on November 8 along with M16 rifle and heavy ammunitions, which was also scheduled to delivered in Darjeeling, since then GTA Sabhasad Sanjay Thulung has been missing.

The disclosure of second arms incident bound for Darjeeling has been shocker to the people of Darjeeling, which is also making more complex issue in the days to come.

“The raid was conducted over some suspicions yesterday. But he is absconding. Police are trying to tracek him down,” said Darjeeling district superintendent of police Akhilesh Chaturvedi.
Police sources confirmed that the GTA official had a link with the arms haul in Assam.
Two persons, who were arrested in Assam with the arms and ammunition, and were headed for north Bengal, were produced in the Bongaigaon Court in Assam today. Police said one of the arrested persons hails from Darjeeling.
“We have got some leads, but we cannot divulge anything for the sake of investigations,” said superintendent of police Ranjan Bhuiyan of Chirang district in Assam over telephone today.

A police team in Darjeeling today raided the home of a GTA Sabha member in connection with an arms haul in Assam from a Bengal-bound vehicle that yielded several guns and many rounds of ammunition on Saturday night.

Thulung, who is absconding, is the organising secretary of the Gorkha Janmukti Yuva Morcha.

Late tonight, phone calls to Morcha general secretary, to get the official reaction from the party, went unanswered.

In Assam, two persons who were in the car were arrested. Assam police have identified them as Umesh Thami of Darjeeling and Ganesh Chhetri of Baksa in Assam.

PTI quoted an Assam police officer, inspector-general L.R. Bishnoi, as saying on Saturday that the two men had said a militant outfit in the Northeast had helped in giving them the firearms meant for an outfit in Darjeeling.

The Tata Safari had a Bengal registration number. Assam police said they suspected that the vehicle, coming from Dimapur in Nagaland, was headed for Siliguri. It was intercepted by security forces in Chirang district in lower Assam based on intelligence inputs.

A three-member police team from Bengal today reached Assam to interrogate the arrested duo. “A team of Bengal police arrived in Chirang today to interrogate the two persons arrested in this connection,” a Assam police source said.

Officers of central intelligence agencies are also expected to reach Chirang tomorrow to interrogate the arrested duo.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) today said it is suspecting that a huge cache of arms and ammunition seized at Chapaguri under the Dhaligaon police station in Assam could have been used for subversive activities in West Bengal.

The revelation was made during the interrogation of two arrested youths — Umesh Kami (29) from Lankapara, Birpara thana in Alipurdwar district and Ganesh Chetry (53) from Baksha district of Assam. The two were allegedly carrying the consignment in a Tata Safari with West Bengal registration number WB74A 4788. The two allegedly have links with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland.

It is alarming to note that many national news papers have wrongfully attributed Umesh Kami's residence as being Darjeeling and have thus pointed fingers at those associated with Gorkhaland demand. The Telegraph even got Umesh Kami's name wrong and has called him Umesh Thami.

In this regard Police sources in Darjeeling said that around 7.30pm today, a team raided the home of Sanjay Thulung, the GTA member from Glenburn.

Police are still unable to ascertain for whom the arms were being smuggled, however national media has attributed the arms to a new underground organization which is being called the "United Gorkha Peoples Organization." The Director General of Police was however uncertain and said that naming any organization without completing the investigation would be grossly wrong.

Darjeling - Delhi police today announced the arrest of the Indian Mujahideen officiating head, Tehsin Akhtar, and linked him to the blasts at Narendra Modi’s rally in Patna last year.

The special cell of Delhi police said 23-year-old Akhtar alias Monu was arrested in Darjeeling today. But Intelligence Bureau officials in Delhi said he was detained by them a few days ago and handed over to the police after interrogation yesterday.

Special commissioner of Delhi police S.N. Srivastava contested the bureau’s claim.

The arrest of Akhtar, who the police said hailed from Darbhanga in Bihar, came days after some IM operatives were arrested in Ajmer and Jaipur on Sunday.

“Akhtar was the officiating head of the Indian Mujahideen after the arrest of the outfit’s commander Yasin Bhatkal last year. Akhtar was heading terror operations in India and was in direct touch with the Bhatkal brothers, Riyaz and Iqbal, the co-founders of the outfit said to be hiding in Pakistan,” Srivastava said.

The officer added the special cell arrested Akhtar in Naxalbari, Darjeeling, following a tip-off it received while interrogating the IM operatives arrested on Sunday.

“The special cell team arrested Akhtar after his location was disclosed by one his associates, Pakistani terrorist Zia-Ur-Rehman alias Waqas. He was arrested on Sunday in Ajmer. Akhtar was a close aide and a protégé of Yasin Bhatkal,” Srivastava said.

Delhi police had on Sunday nabbed Waqas in Ajmer. His arrest coincided with the capture of three of his associates —- Mohammed Mahruf, Mohammed Waqar Azhar and Shaquib Ansari — in Jaipur.

Srivastva said today: “Akhtar’s elevation as the IM’s India chief happened after the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi in August 2013. They were arrested near the India-Nepal border. Akhtar had been handling all the India-based modules of the outfit. He was the key link between the IM and other splinter terror groups that have emerged from the umbrella of the Students Islamic Movement of India (Simi).”

According to police sources, Akhtar’s interrogation had revealed that he was known to Gayur Ahmad Jamali, an IM operative arrested in 2011. Jamali had allegedly introduced Akhtar to Kafeel and Yasin Bhatkal, following which Akhtar rose up the ranks and became an important member of the terror outfit.

“His (Akhtar) first assignment was to act as the carrier for Pakistan-based terrorist Adil Ajmal and to ensure that he safely crossed over to Nepal through India. His second assignment was to receive Waqas and Haddi in Kathmandu. Soon after that, all three along with Yasin Bhatkal and Adil Ajmal carried out the Jama Masjid attacks in 2010,” said a senior police officer in Delhi.

The police said Akhtar was involved in the blast in Varanasi’s Seetla Ghat, a cooker-bomb explosion outside Jama Masjid in Delhi, the serial blasts in Mumbai in 2011, the bombings in Pune in 2012 and the twin explosions in Hyderabad last year.

“After the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal and Haddi, Akhtar left Jodhpur and went to Kerala’s Munnar where Waqas was also hiding. After staying there for a few months, Akhtar went to Bihar and masterminded the Patna blasts,” the police officer added.

As the National Investigation Agency (NIA) readies a chargesheet against Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar, fresh details have emerged from questioning of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives by the Delhi police special cell. Yasin had reportedly planned to set up a module in Nepal, where he claimed to have recruited around a dozen men and got support of the "like-minded" to finance terror. He had also planned to get the recruits trained by Gorkha Task Force.

The details will be included in the NIA chargesheet. The agency probing the larger conspiracy by IM is also likely to mention the role of Yasin in the 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune.

Yasin, Qateel Siddiqui and Mirza Himayat Baig have been named in an ATS chargesheet in the case. While Qateel was murdered in a Pune jail, Baig was convicted last year. However, after the arrest of Yasin, his counsel moved a higher court demanding a re-investigation by the NIA. He said Yasin had not named Baig during interrogation.

According to details of his interrogation accessed by The Indian Express, Yasin radicalised a few "neo-convert Muslims" in Nepal for jihad. He also claimed to have asked Riyaz about private firms such as Gorkha Task Force, which give similar military training to the "British Army" and "Singapore Police" as in Pakistan, to train the recruits. However, Riyaz cautioned him that if a trained recruit was arrested in India, their purpose would be defeated.

The details also suggest that the IM planned to bring arms and ammunition to Nepal with the help of the ISI. Yasin also told his interrogators that he was trying to obtain citizenship of Nepal and was in the process of procuring a passport with fake documents.

He and Asadullah are in the custody of the Delhi police special cell in connection with the 2010 Jama Masjid terror attack.
