In keeping with the directive of GJM chief Bimal Gurung, the students’ wing of the party in Kalimpong yesterday kicked off the ‘Mission Gorkhaland’ campaign. The Kalimpong Municipal Committee of the Vidhyarthi Morcha launched the campaign involving students from all constituencies to inform people about the need for a separate state of Gorkhaland.
A workshop was held in the afternoon in the Town Hall and it was attended by students from the No. 34 Holmes-Bhalukhop constituency. Students from SUMI, Kalimpong Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Pranami Vidhyalaya and Dr Graham’s Homes were also present at the event. Vidyarthi Morcha president Dipen Thapa, vice president Deep Thapa, secretary Samir Sundas and GJM central committee member Tara Lohar Lepcha addressed the gathering during the workshop.
They expressed their views on the role students should play in terms of the statehood movement. Slamming the repressive policies of the state government, the speakers urged the students to participate in the movement and to remain aware of developments.
