Nepali programme telecast by DD Bangla lengthening appeal

Demanding lengthening of the duration of the Nepali programme telecast by DD Bangla, local organisation Ramakrishna Coaching Centre today faxed a petition to chief minister Mamata Banerjee who also heads the Information and Cultural ministry of the state government.

The RCC has sought inclusion of a news bulletin and other informative programmes in the Nepali programme slot by increasing its duration to one hour.

According to the organisation, the Nepali programme being aired by DD Bangla five days a week is not benefiting Nepali speaking viewers. Speaking to journalists, Ramakrishna Coaching Centre director Sishir Kumar Sharma said, “A mere 20-minute programme is being telecast by the channel; moreover the programme hardly has a practical aspect. People opt to watch DD Bangla for latest developments in the state, but most don’t understand Bengali.”

He further said, “We want the Nepali programme to be telecast for a minimum of one hour and ensured it contains informative programmes also.”

Sharma lamented that although the state government professes the Darjeeling hills to be an essential part of Bengal, the absence of a proper Nepali programme in the government-run TV channel is giving a feeling of being deprived to people here. He added the RCC will decide on its future moves after gauging the state government’s response.
