Rare Civet Cat rescued in Kurseong

A rare Civet Cat was rescued from Selim Hill Tea estate area near Tindharia under Kurseong sub division today.


A few locals of the area had seen and rescued the rare animal early this morning from the estate. The locals informed the police officials of the Tindharia Outpost, who accordingly informed the Sukna Wildlife Sanctuary personnel. The locals handed over the rare animal to the wildlife rangers, who revealed the animal was a rear species known as Civet cat.

According to wildlife sources, Civet cats are a carnivorous belonging to the cat family that lives in dense forests of the lower foothills of the Himalayan Ranges. There are a lot of species within the Civet Cat family and is considered an endangered species. Some of the Civet species are not seen very commonly.

The rescued cat was taken to the Sukna Wildlife Sanctuary’s Rescue Center where it will be monitored until it can be released back to the wild.

Notably, the discovery of such rare species is not a first of its kind. Rare animals have been earlier found at other tea estates in Kurseong region, mainly from areas surrounding Makaibari tea estate.
