Sixth Schedule status guarantee land ownership rights for tea garden workers

Mirik : During a Himalayan Plantation Workers’ Union meeting held today in Belgachi, GNLF youth leader Navraj Chettri said once Sixth Schedule status is achieved for the hills, all tea garden workers will gain land ownership rights.

“Today, the situation in the tea gardens is such that the youths are being forced to move out to earn a living. But one cannot even build a pucca house with the money thus earned,” said Chettri, adding, “But under Sixth Schedule the workers will automatically become the owners of their land and be able to enjoy their rights.”

Lashing at rival political parties Chettri said no party is capable of winning the rights of tea workers. He, however, stressed the Sixth Schedule status being demanded by the GNLF will give workers the much-needed right over their land. He also ridiculed the GJM saying although it has been claiming of initiating development through the GTA the funds being used are actually coming from the centre and the state, making its claims “shameful and ridiculous”.
