Darjeeling Schools has slowly but steadily fallen from grace

There was time when studying in a Darjeeling convent school was considered to be a privilege. But thanks to the political turmoil in the Hills - and more unfortunately the schools being dragged into the muddle - Darjeeling has slowly but steadily fallen from grace. With the Queen of Hills not an option any more and admission in Kolkata schools becoming increasingly difficult, it seems Siliguri has emerged as the next-best alternative.

Several national brands in the field of education are, therefore, cashing in on the demand and have either started their schools in Siliguri or are about to do so.

Take the case of Shri Ram College of Commerce and Lady Shri Ram College, two brands that Delhi University students swear by. The century-old legacy in higher education is translating itself into school education for the first time as it starts a school campus in Siliguri. Christened as Shriram Centennial School, the campus will become operational from April 2014.

The group is keeping the matter under wraps for the moment and is about to make a public announcement in the beginning of next month. The campus, on a sprawling 25-acre plot on Sevoke Road, is nearing completion. The school will have day care, day boarding, weekend boarding and full boarding facilities to fulfill the need of all categories of parents.

"Yes, we are setting up a campus in Siliguri but we will make a formal announcement on March 1," said Karan, co-ordinator of the school campus.

For the past couple of years, Mayo College Ajmer has been trying to set up its school brand Mayoor in Siliguri. At present, schools of this franchisee exist in Ajmer, Jodhpur, Noida and Raipur. All of them are considered to be premier institutions. The group reportedly tried to acquire land at Sukna but it did not materialize. According to sources, efforts are on to find an alternative plot.

Another big name in the national school circuit, Modi Public School, Kota, is becoming operational in Siliguri from the 2014 academic session. The sprawling campus at Matigara will have all facilities that Modi schools are famous for across the country.

Delhi-based Goenka Public School chain, which has 30 schools across the country, has already started functioning in Siliguri. "As a new-age school, we serve the right balance of studies and extra-curricular activities in an environment of international standard. While aristocratic families preferred Darjeeling schools earlier because of their European heritage value, the prevailing political upsurge is not conducive for education. Moreover, the weather in Siliguri is also pleasant as against the extremes in Darjeeling," explained spokesperson Sonika Sharma.

The argument was upheld by Robin Chakraborty, chief of St Michael's School, an old institution in Siliguri. "The Hills would get a large number of students from Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Today, these parents care coming to Siliguri for their wards. Naturally, it makes sense for big school brands to come to Siliguri," he said.
