The hill unit of the Trinamool Congress is all geared up to launch its campaign for party candidate Bhaichung Bhutia. The party has formed an election committee comprising 11 members of which Nanita Gautam and Chewang Bhutia are the president and secretary, respectively.
Speaking to media persons today, hill TMC secretary Pravin Rahapal said Bhaichung Bhutia will arrive in Kalimpong on Friday and campaign at various places of the sub-division till March 24. On March 25, Bhaichung will be present with TMC president Mamata Bannerjee in a mass rally at Gorubathan, he added.
Rahapal said Bhaichung is likely to arrive in town at 10:00am and a grand welcome has been arranged by at 7th Mile. The TMC candidate is slated to tour Relli, Rousey Bazaar, Chibo Busty, Biralkoti and other places tomorrow and meet representatives of various organisations in the evening.
On Saturday, the TMC candidate will campaign in Algarah, Pedong and Kagey and the following day he will visit Bermek, Mansong, Kyasong and other areas. Bhaichung will also campaign at Kafer, Lalepala, Seyokbir and Samthar a day before heading off to Gorubathan for the mass function.
Meanwhile, Chewang Bhutia welcomed GNLF chief Subash Ghising’s return to his home in Darjeeling. In a bid to secure the GNLF’s support, he said, “Even if the GJM says the GNLF has no support base in the hills, the hill TMC considers the GNLF as the second-largest party here. We hope the GNLF extends support to us in the election.”
Hill TMC women’s wing leader Naniata Gautam said the party is at present “practically working” for establishment of peace and democracy in the hills. Stating that peace has now returned to the hills under the active initiatives of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, she urged voters to make the “correct use” of their right of franchise.
