The DDUDF is a non-political organisation and renowned academician Dr. Mahendra P Lama is contesting the polls from the Darjeeling constituency seat under its banner as an independent candidate. Accordingly, the DDUDF and its wings including the women’s wing have been campaigning for Lama in various places of the hills.

As part of the campaigning, the DDUDF women’s wing was touring a tea estate area in Kurseong and when the door-to-door campaigning was almost over by evening, an unidentified person approached the women and handed them a mobile phone. The caller reportedly asked them to leave the area immediately saying they are excused this time, but any attempt to campaign in the area again would result in dire consequences. The caller allegedly told the DDUDF members that “these are the areas of our leader and no one will be allowed to campaign here”.

A DDUDF women’s leader said since Dr. Lama has stressed on refraining from keeping any sort of enmity with anyone, no FIR has been filed over the incident. However, they have decided to ask Dr. Lama to visit the area himself and campaign more rigorously, she added.
