Twenty-three-year-old Arun Rai, a young supporter of the SDF party who was brutally beaten up and then pushed down a 100-feet cliff while he was returning from the 22nd Foundation Day celebrations of the SDF party on March 4 succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night at the Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok. Rai was on a ventilator in the ICU of the hospital following the attack. Doctors had advised not to move his head because of which he could not be transferred to other hospitals. Arjun Rai was a resident of Chakung in West Sikkim.
He was allegedly accosted by SKM supporters when he was on his way home from Jorethang on the night of March 4 after attending the event. He received severe injuries after he was brutally beaten up and pushed from a cliff. He passed away around 9 pm on Tuesday.
The SDF party had blamed the politically motivated attack on SKM and their politics of violence that draws inspiration from Golay’s incendiary statements such as “let loose your hands”, and had accused Golay of abetting violence and the resultant deaths. The alleged attackers namely Khem Prasad Gurung, Suren Rai and six others got bail today at 4pm.
