378 empty posts in Hill Panchayat set up - Government least bothered

With the elections to Panchayat in the Darjeeling hills not having undertaken since 2005, the panchayat structure in Darjeeling is crumbling and is on its death bed.

The hiring process for panchayat employees - which includes the posts of Sahayak, Panchayat Secretary, Office assistant etc stopped 10 years ago, and no hiring for these posts have taken place since the year 2003-04.

Over the last 10 years, the government of West Bengal has not filled 378 posts in the panchayat system in the hills, and they have not even given promotion to those employees who have been working in the hill panchayat offices.

Moreover lack of panchayat officials has caused grave problem for the local people, as they are denied of the facilities that were provided through the Panchayat. Especially people from rural areas, old and sick people have had to face a lot of problem due to the non-functioning of the Panchayat in the hills.

This is not just apathy and neglect, but also gross violation of our rights. We request the GTA to take up this matter with the Central and state government as soon as possible
